JP> oh yeah!! and what is the difference between these 2 fat? The biggest difference is that SR2 can use FAT32, while SR1 cannot. But that's not what I was thinking about. I will use NT as the primary example, and then come back to W95 afterwards. Whenever I format a partition under NT 4, as FAT, the FAT isn't written exactly the way DOS writes it. Therefore, I get an error message saying that the media descriptor is invalid. Still, Norton Disk Doctor detects it as FAT, and I am able to read the partition through DOS nevertheless. The same problem occurred when I had installed Win95 SR2 on my system. I only ran it for a couple of days, as it developed some strange behaviour, and it started crashing for no apparent reason. Therefore, I removed the installation, and reinstalled SR1. Before doing so, I ran NDD again, and it detected an invalid media descriptor byte on the partitions I had formatted during my time with SR2. I do not get this error message with SR1 or previous versions of Windows 95. Thus my conclusion that the FAT (FAT16) written by SR2 (and NT 4) is slightly different from the FAT(16) in Win95SR1 and earlier versions. - csj@hl.telia.no - --- BBBS/L v3.33 How * Origin: Errors HQ: Prog/Emul/Linux/Demos, +47-56341083 (2:211/16) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 206 WINDOWS 32BIT Ref: ECZ00002 Date: 08/29/97 From: CHRIS HOLTEN Time: 03:30pm \/To: TONY DUNLAP (Read 5 times) Subj: Long file name backup CH> Also, I've made hundreds of floppys with NT over the past 4 CH> years and never had any trouble with any other DOS, Win 95, CH> OS/2 or NT system reading them. It is even mentioned in a couple of NT TD> course manuals I've attended. Hmmm, I've never had a problem and I use my NT system exclusively to format and to copy floppys (virus protection). I've heard of people saying they've had the same problem with OS/2 and I never had a problem there either and you get a similiar message when you try to boot an OS/2 formatted floppy. Not that I couldn't have a problem some day some way of course, I guess I just don't understand what conditions it takes to make a floppy with NT that could cause DOS systems to have difficulty reading them. Over the past 4 years I've formatted bukus of floppys and copied data to them to be used specifically by DOS/W95 systems and not had a problem. Does your Microsoft manual tell you what specific conditions/type of hardware you have to have to get NT to format floppys such that DOS can't read them? . --- Maximus/NT 3.01b1 * Origin: Cowboy Country USA! I've just installed NT4. The result is that I'm very disappointed by the screen aspect. Since all my applications are not recognized by NT, I still launch DOS/win3.11, especially for making archives on my SyQuest or testing sharewares. Under Win3.11, the In-control tools shipped with the video package enable frequency and position adjustment as well as they offer the comfort of a virtual desktop. Unfortunately they seem not to exist under NT4. I can live with the offset but not without screen panning! I've tested some shares like Big-desk and other ones but I'm not satisfied. I really want a 1152x1024 virtual screen with a 800x600 visible area ! :-)) Does anybody have an idea to solve my problem? ... - I wrote my own benchmark, my machine is now 500 MHz. ___ ZylFree v1.44 - L'autre reader en freeware! --- ZylMail v0.0.2 * Origin: Zyllius BBS! 9332.0505 - 4 Lines USR 33.6k StPaul.FR (2:323/7) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 206 WINDOWS 32BIT Ref: ED100000 Date: 08/31/97 From: GARY GILMORE Time: 05:47pm \/To: ALL (Read 5 times) Subj: New in the Windows32 FDN New Windows95 releases, from the Windows32 File Distribution Network.
