CH> However, I found an automatic fax/voice switch box and a 2nd faxmodem CH> with WinfaxPro far superior to messing with Binkley and BGFAX, even CH> though I did get BFAX to work with 16 bit binkley using BNU 1.70 in CH> NT. TA> I actually have a spare faxmodems, so this would be a possibility EXCEPT a TA> switch always answers the phone and that's bad news if TA> the mailer isn't up. TA> (I do get LD Fido calls here). Uh(???)...I get Fidonet LD and lots of other LD calls here also , but my stuff, including my mailer is -always- up and working. I've found that's the best way to achieve reliability and not cost callers unnecessary phone calls and loss of money (faxers, fidonetters or RAS). I actually run three modems off one switch box. One for the BBS (Voice line), FAX (Fax Line) and NT's Remote Access Server (Modem line-requires a touch tone code to be switched to). The RAS modem also is a dialout setup where I connect to my ISP several times a day to automatically pick up E-Mail. I am using Wingate proxy server so's all computers in the LAN can get thier E-Mail. Sending/recieving faxes, sending/recieving fidonet mail, and sending/recieving internet mail through the ISP and having the ability to access the NT Server and LAN remotely. The switch box keeps the three modems from having "collisions" as if one modem is dialed out, and another trys to dial out, the switch box gives the second dialing modem a BUSY signal. Not quite as good as having 3 separate lines, but damn close and one hell of a lot cheaper. I never take the mailer down to do anything else with that modem. It just sits there and answers when it gets a RING. So my jugement is that using 3 modems on the switch box is a -far- more reliable way to keep the BBS/fidonet stuff (and everything else too) up and running than fiddledee farting around with BGFAX and FOSSILS. NT is stone stone cold reliable. So is 32 bit Binkley NT version 2.60 (No fossil). I think you will find your system more likely to go down or not correctly answer the phone pfarting around with BGFAX and your mailer than just using a separate modem and a modem switch box for each function you want to acomplish (In NT anyway, I make no promises about OS/2). I do have a 4th Voicemail modem running in the above NT setup, but that is on a different line. The whole setup is 100% stone cold reliable. It didn't take any tweaking to get it that way either. TA> Since I've got BGFAX working just fine with OS/2, I'll TA> think I'd give it a go TA> with NT. (With two modems, it's easy to get going since TA> I can send a fax from TA> one modem and receive on the other.) Why not use a -real- fax program and just send and recieve faxes from that one modem. BGFAX is quite crude. Doesn't OS/2 have some pretty decent FAX software for it that would allow you to dump BGFAX? (It used to, but I forget the name of the sofware). CH> 32 CH> bit Bink/Max is an excellent mailer/bbs TA> combination to run in NT also. TA> Could be, but since I'd be switching back and forth all the time I eally TA> don't want a new separate setup for NT. Just depends on what software you are running. All Binkley 2.60 flavors, BT32 NT, BT32 OS/2 and BT DOS version 2.60 all use interchangeable .CFG/.PRM files. You can boot any OS of the 3 you want and load any of the 2.60 BT versions and take right off with the same configuration files. Same with Maximus NT and Maximus DOS (And I suspect with Max OS/2, although I've never run Max OS/2). If you are not running any native OS/2 apps other than your BBS stuff, but instead are running DOS/16 bit Windows stuff in OS/2 and you get your BBS going in NT, you probably will find that you won't ever need or even want to switch back to OS/2. I'm an ex OS/2 user myself and that's the way it happened for me. On a properly equipped system, NT runs 16 bit Windows and DOS apps noticibly faster and more reliably than OS/2 (Especially 16 bit Win apps), and it is -excellent- with 32 bit NT/W95 apps. --- Maximus/NT 3.01b1 * Origin: 33,600bps Windows NT _Powered_!
