I see a couple of crashes: One is in the software for Internet use, and I believe it happens in the AST Mach 64 Graphics Xpression video driver--the screen freezes, and the only thing I can do is to reboot the whole computer. The other problem is the more common general protection fault. One of the real problems in Windows 3.1 is that you can't cancel one single program and still keep the rest of the system running. One of the real problems in PG>Windows 3.1 is that you can't cancel one single program and still keep the PG>rest of the system running. Actually I find cntrl-alt-del will kill the last program most of the time and I never have general protection faults anymore. I've paid close attention to suggestions given through FIDO so my Win 3.1 is actually quite well behaved excepting that old video card. I'm shortly going to try Redhat Linux after I install a new vid card. Currently running 2,730 Meg. virtual, 20 real, running Netscape 4.03 w/o problems, not bad for a 1993 Packard Bell 486. I've no interest in upgrading from Win 3.1 until I've seen a real need plus once the hardware situation becomes more clear I'll upgrade hardware. Intel's slot one has really complicated the situation for the time being so I guess I'll just wait until things sort themselves out, seems like Intel is taking a hint from Micro- soft in trying to monopolize the market. Until the direction of things becomes more clear I'll live with my current system as outside of software loading time it still suits quite well. If you are running the OSR2 Version of Win 95 you can edit MSDOS.SYS and in options put AUTOSCAN=2. This will start scandisk without the usual prompt. The original, and the original plus the FixPack (95A) work properly with the OldDOS choice. The two main variations in the OEMSR2 ver- sions have a problem with that choice. Your description sounds as if you have one of those (95B) versions. There is a faster/easier way to recover from the over-written file situation than a complete reinstall, but if there is a useful work- around in OEMSR2 to easily choose OldDOS, I personally don't know it (and don't run the 95B on my systems). It is curious that the boot menu in the OSR2 IO.SYS doesn't have the OldDOS choice either eliminated or "grayed out." Someone else here, like Alan, Bill, Hans or Jerry, can provide you with some help if you are ever forced to make the OldDOS choice another time, and want the easier recovery route.. (as I said, I don't run the OSR2 version & didn't retain a copy of a discussion or maybe a couple of them, that appeared in one of the Windows Echos here in Fido). Bill D ...
