I was in France this spring and the clients machine had a boot sector virus. Norton would detect it but not clean it. Macafee cleaned it without a hitch. I had the most recent version (at that time) of each product. In most cases it will not worry you. So running defragmentation program is not rally necessary. One can use Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows NT to defragment NTFS as well as FAT.
