Anyone have any idea whether Microsoft intends to offer year 2k file fixes for its existing products such as Win 3.1. I've gotten rather found of 3.1 as I've fixed all problems leading to crashes except due to my rather stange video card, which I'm about to change. * SLMR 2.1a * --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: Tampa Bay Computer Society * (813)298-8693 (1:3603/570) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 118 WINDOWS Ref: F5G00039 Date: 04/18/98 From: DAVE LICHTENSTEIN Time: 01:11am \/To: BILL DAWSON (Read 4 times) Subj: Re: Tape Drives in Windows My apologies Bill I actually wanted to address both yourself and John Readle as it would appear that you both have part of my problem. As I understand it John runs the "Iomega" Tape Drive (which I have) and you dual boot between Win3.11/DOs6.22 and Win 95 using Sytem Commander (whereas I dual boot from the same Win/DOs but to Win98 using Boot Manager). The upshoot is that I have "interference" problems with my sound card and its drivers with my Tape Drive. It would also seem that the both of you have encountered similar problems. That being the case, I was hoping to see if there was an easy solution to the problem from experts such as yourself. I'm still not doing W95, so this is (I hope) an educated guess. :-) It's probably W95's equivalent of running chkdsk /f and converting lost chains to files, Ted. In DOS, one can use a sector editor to try to find out what they're supposed to be, but one generally just deletes them; and the real question is: what's causing those lost chains in the first place? --- Via Silver Xpress V4.4P [Reg] * Origin: FOG-Line BBS - 515-964-7937 - 1:290/627 (1:290/627) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 118 WINDOWS Ref: F5G00043 Date: 04/17/98 From: BOBBY CRAIG Time: 01:44pm \/To: ALL (Read 4 times) Subj: Millennium Report Hi, With all this talk of computers crashing etc at the Mellennium I though you might be interested in this snip from The Scotsman newspaper printed on th 7th of April this year........ You can look at them with an editor and see if they hold anything of value, me as my Windows has only Dos temp files I just delete them. Milage may vary depeding on how your system is setup. I have backups upon backups and recovery systems in place, nevertheless I always del file000?.chk when I find them. Rebuilding these files should they hold anything of value is not a easy task unless you're an expert. Example I have a bunch of shareware programs I want to install to a computer from a cd (I burned). I install these programs alot right and I want to make it easy on myself by initiating one program that will inturn execute the selected programs I wish to be installed. So I don't have to execute them one at a time. There are in total about 10 or 12 Win 3.1 & Win95 shareware programs I install regularly on computers I sell. It would be nice if I could run one program for all of them.
