I too (using both OS/2 and NT) can see the difference in simple programs that do / don't use threading. The best example is the difference between Eudora 3 and PMMail (OS/2). The latter is vastly superior in one respect to the former as - simply put - you can do quite a few different things at one time. The unfortunate thing about OS/2, of course, is that it's a great OS looking for some modern mainstream applications. Something about an IBM proprietary system for certain US banks, tweaked for marginal costing for a wider audience ... TD> I suspect that the percentage of home users who need the stability and TD> superior multi-tasking features of NT is somewhere in the single digits. So what you mean is that a home-user is prepared to push that reset-button about once every hour because their machine was hanging? I'm not exagerating here, since this is exactly what happened with me when I was running Win95. I also had to re-install Win95 about once every week, while NT has been running since august 1996 now, and I didn't have to re-install it since then. I do agree that almost no home-user will need WinNT Server, since it has too many options and apps which no-one needs (except administrators of large networks), but WorkStation is becoming a very good OS for home-users... and as far as I am concerned it is billions of times better than Win95 and a hundred times better than OS/2 (especially since OS/2 can't run Win apps anymore). If -> you've got two drives connected to one card, you're mirroring. Hi Rick, Not always. You can do software duplexing with certain controllers. It's less effective than hardware with two controllers and less redundant as well. You're right however people do confuse the two. There is some loss (small) of performance in having the router filter packets to eliminate routing certain ones and pass others, however this is a first line of defense. The second level (on at least a remedial basis) happens to be built into NT4.x. This level provides some security for hosts beyond the packet filtering by allowing logging of security violations and user access. It also can block more intrusive services and particularly x windows sessions to provide a second layer of defense. If you're wondering why some software companies charge an arm and leg for firewall software it's because understanding all the possible ports of TCP/IP and even filter design can be a long term task for anyone not physically attached by the wrist and ankle to TCP/IP. :) The beauty of TCP/IP is in it's flexable nature but it's also a nightmare to provide secure systems on. If you poke about the net just looking for the word "firewall" you'll see there are a lot of companies with great business success providing them. For a better understanding my two favorite books are "PCWeeks, Intranet and Internet Firewall Strategies" and "Windows Magazines, Windows NT 4.0 Installation and Configuration Handbook". Armed with those two I've hammered out a few firewall setups for several companies including our own. Hope that helps. I like that as we did have some reactivity with some systems loading it as a applet. It's even more stable now. The chief problems we've had with all drivers is in a mismatched 95/OEM driver accellerator feature. This can be workaround'ed by adjusting the "graphics accellerator" performanace in the device manager screens. Normally a notch or two down fixes it with no noticable performance change. -> For our purposes the ATI mach 64 was much more stable and we didn't see ny -> significant performance difference between the two cards. After the problems with ATI/Adaptec/Intel Triton chipsets we pretty much dropped support for ATI and sell only STB. Is was hard enough to get them to admit it was a problem with the Mach cards let alone do anything about it. It took me on the phone with ATI tech support reading a MSTechnet bulletin word for word to get them to react. Mileage varies but I've gotten better sales and service out of STB.
