--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 118 WINDOWS Ref: F3S00006 Date: 03/21/98 From: PETE GRANZEAU Time: 05:27pm \/To: ALL (Read 2 times) Subj: Help Windows in 3.1 I am having a bit of a problem with Help Windows in Windows 3.1. Several programs open what looks like it ought to be a full-screen (maximized) Help Window, only it is offset several pixels down and to the right, leaving the right side and bottom borders off the screen. I can move the Window so it is correct, but the next time, it will be down and right, again. A check in WIN.INI shows the following line: M_WindowPosition=[-3,-3,806,607,0] --which makes it appear that it is trying to put the Window centered, but evidently is ignoring the minus signs in the first two numbers. I have tried modifying this line to 1,1,800,600,0, but that has no effect on the Help Window; and that line goes back to the numbers shown above each time. Does anyone have any idea whether I can do anything about this, or is that just something else I am going to have to live with? Regards, PHG phg@exis.net ... "Man is the only animal that blushes. I've ordered some white papers (from Compaq and InterGraph) which explain how they use the "better" architecture located in their systems. As far as I'm concerned, these systems are built so that maximum performance is gained due to the use of better mem-architecture. But f course, they make everything sound as good as possible for the consumer.. But anyway, I don't feel like continuing this discussion before I get some pre-emptive information about this matter. --- BBBS/2 v3.42 ToMmIk-5v * Origin: Deaf Leopard - 06-3207580 V.34/ISDN - 3200759 7*V.34 (2:224/0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 118 WINDOWS Ref: F3S00008 Date: 03/22/98 From: JERRY SCHWARTZ Time: 09:19pm \/To: TERRY G WRIGHT (Read 2 times) Subj: W95 & W3.11 applications [Mar 05, 98 - 19:48] Terry G Wright of 2:345/210.25 wrote to All: TGW> He said that my W3.11 applications wont't run well or sometimes at all TGW> on an OEM W95 install. I used the some of the 16-bit Lotus Suite stuff on Win95, Lotus was almost a year late getting 1-2-3 out the door and I used the 16-bit version of WordPro for a while. (I don't use Approach.) I can't address the others, beyond saying that I think there was a patch for some version of MSWorks. I can't imagine how you would LOSE Internet functionality, since Win95 does it much better than Win3.x and in a backwards-compatible way. I have had NO problems (well, one bug) with Internet functionality. Of course, I use Netscape Navigator, and not MS Internet Explorer. ;) It almost sounds like the fellow is trying to con you into buying new software for the profit. TGW> And the idea of going the upgrade route to have only a half TGW> functioning system doesn't attract me. I still have trouble swallowing that bit about "full pack" vs upgrade. AND I can testify from over 2 years of use (I upgraded in September of 1995) that the upgrade version of '95 is VERY much a useful & functioning platform! FWIW, I run a Dos (Bink/Maximus) BBS in the background 24 hours/day, "surf the net" on my Sportster X2 while the BBS is running on the other line on the Sportster 28.8; without a glitch. The bug I referred to earlier was in the original '95 upgrade (can't say if they added the fix on the latest upgrade CD's; it's easy to find on the MS website) was a kernel leak when you had a lot of Winsock apps open, but once I applied the fix, no problems at all! In fact, I (knock on wood! ) haven't even had Navigator crash on me in at least a month... I run a Pentium-class system (amd K5-133) with 32 megs of ram & a 4 gig drive. DH> If anyone has any suggestions or ideas it would be greatly I don't know what the problem is but here are a few things you might try to track the problem down. Disable virus scanners that might be in your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT to see if that is causing the noise. Run Scandisk and Defrag from Windows 95. Run Memory Maker from Windows unless your running Qemm or some other memory mgr. Upgrade you memory mgr to the Win 95 version. If your running an old copy of Norton, disable it for your Win 95 setup until you can upgrade. If your still having problems with your floppies in any way, edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT by REMing out each line. Start at the bottom and work upwards. After REMing out the first line, reboot. Check your floppy drive to see if it works. If it still don't work, enable the last line REMed out and REM out the next line and so on. Keep repeating the cycle. Until you find the line causing the problem. You can then go to the doc's and find out why there's a problem. If that don't work, boot up using F8 and by pass your whole setup. If that don't work, I think you have a bad drive. Luck! Daddy John ... Save this message!
