Also if adding hardware a device description and DDC> config parameters aare stored in the reg So why isn't the file DDC> updated after win has determined that the new hardware still DDC> works..... I think Jerry was a little off on the System.1st "never" getting updated. It is supposed to be a copy that holds the settings for the more or less "essential" hardware and software setup. This is the first level of the registry that is checked to insure the system stability before the GUI is launched and the remaining registry (SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT) is loaded. You can see this in action by doing a step-by-step boot; the registry is accessed once as the config.sys and autoexec.bat are processed, and then again as the Windows drivers are loaded. If you change hardware that is essential to the bootup of the computer, then the System.1st file should get updated to correspond. Hardware and software that isn't needed can be left in the main registry. So your video card, network card, hard drives, etc. would likely be referenced in System.1st, but sound cards and modems don't have to be. --- Blue Wave/Max v2.30 [NR] * Origin: Pikes Peak Computer Application Society BBS (1:128/13) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 118 WINDOWS Ref: F3300065 Date: 03/01/98 From: FRED JONES Time: 04:52pm \/To: CHRISTOPHER GREAVES (Read 2 times) Subj: Re: win3.x on a 386? |02|10 |15Christopher Greaves |10Was Talking To |15All |10On |02|10 |1521 Feb 98 20:54:00 |10Regarding |15win3.x on a 386? |10...
