SB> Has anyone else had a problem similar to this with windows 98? Standard MS beta OS policy - it's timebombed to expire (current build I have is set to knees-up on 24 Aug) If you have a 98 boot disk just re-Sys the drive If you dont then making one is a wee bit more awkward than usual though I reckon this should work though I've not had to test it.. on a win95 machine run regedit browse through the tree to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup change Source Path entry from x:\Win95 to x:\Win98 (where x is drive letter of CDROM) Insert the Win98 beta CD Goto Control Panel Add remove Software go the Startup Disk tab choose create disk Create disk (unless there's been radical changes to the basic cab formats) should now write the startup disk using files from the Win98 CD rather than the Win95 one Once you have the startup disk reverse the process to return source path entry back to its proper Win95 state hth Steven C. --- * Origin: Stevens Point off of S.O.D (2:258/69.12) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 118 WINDOWS Ref: F2U00001 Date: 02/17/98 From: DAVID DA COSTA Time: 07:31am \/To: JERRY SCHWARTZ (Read 3 times) Subj: System.1st JS> It is there for emergency recovery, since it is a known good registry JS> that never gets changed. But the Registry gets updated all the time and if it does stuff up The emergancy boot disk is suposed ta fix it. Mind you every time win95 has stuffed up it has been something other than a registry problem as i said in my previous msg that it has neva been touched by win and worx fine without it. It does not even use it in safe mode witch is where it is prob needed most if anything so to me it is a dud file and dud files get removed. Also if adding hardware a device description and config parameters aare stored in the reg So why isn't the file updated after win has determined that the new hardware still works..... Cya. Or am I barking up the wrong tree? The co-author of _Windows95 Secrets_, Brian Livingston, writes a column for InfoWorld. Shortly before/after the release of the 1st publicly sold version, he detailed the process and I transcribed it, but it's quite long for an echo message. His way gives access to the old Windows' groups & capabilities by duplicating the original Win3.1 folders under a new name, editing the INI's and changing the properties of icons to match the new folder name. I didn't go to that much trouble. I installed Win95 into a new, empty directory called Win95, told the install I wanted to have access to OldDOS, and copied the GRP files I wanted duplicated in W95's Start Menu into the new OS's folder where I could use GROUPCNV (or whatever its name is) to process the group files. Worked very well and much less difficulty than Livingston's way. With Jerry's permission (he moderates the echo), if you want the text of the Livingston article, I'll post it. Bill D ... When I was with Apogee Software, many of our older games simply would not run on faster machines, remembering that they had been developed when the 286 and 386 ruled the roost. Without going into the big long technicals of it, the processors were simply too fast for the older games, and they errored out with messages similar to the ones you saw. --- GoldED 3.00.Beta2+ - Spank Our Wombats! * Origin: "Who knows Latin?
