This is a tough question to answer. First of all, "power" means different things to different people. Second, a great deal depends on the kinds of things you want to do in your programs. Visual BASIC is mostly a relatively easy method of invoking methods in either VBX or OCX controls (depending on the version of VB involved.) It _can_ be used to do almost anything you want to, but if too much of the program is written in VB, you typically end up with considerably slower development, and the programs you produce may have speed problems as well. C++ tends toward the opposite extreme. It's frequently used to create the VBX/OCX controls used in many VBX programs. C++ imposes virtually no limits on what you can do, but may require more work on your part to accomplish the things you want to. VB is generally at its best when used to do either relatively simple things, or things similar to what a lot of other people are doing. C++ is typically at its best when you need to do relatively complex things that may be relatively unusual compared to what others are doing. Later, Jerry. ... They should be available tommorow morning at the SNIPPETS WWW and FTP sites, from juge.com and 1:106/2000. Allow another day or two for them to be distributed via the PDN and SimTel where I will next send them. The names to look for are SNIP9707.ZIP/RAR/LZH/etc. and SNPD9707.et al. This would be a good time for those using PC's to try out SNIPDIFF. Since this is primarily a maintenance release, SNIPDIFF is only around 115K archived, including the DOS utility to create a fully-validated new copy of SNIP9707 from your existing virgin copy of SNIP9611. However, I need to learn the microsoft vc version 5. Any good book that you would recommend. I started with Visual C++ 5 from the ground up, subtitled "open this bood as a novice and finish it as a pro". A good title but the book assumes you know how to use vc 5. The first example starts with the enter this text... without talking about setting up the project, selecting which file to place the text in, or how to use the editor. I can find all these things out, but that is what I purchased the book for. ... Sorry to drudge up old memories, but I finnaly got around to reading the responses to my three questions. In the process, I found out that my iostream.h didn't work. Now, I know you are all probably laughing at my incopetence, but the programs that several of you gave me (regarding saving data to files and receiving it) didn't work and when i looked at the errors, it took me to iostream.h. One question you are probably asking is "what program are you using?" I am using Turbo C++ by Borland. It is a DOS version, and since I am using W95, that may be my problem. Does anyone know what I should do? Is it possible just to replace it with a working copy if iostream.h? If so ... where do I get it? Thanks for you help. Oh, I will sombine two messages into one. Other questions I asked were about putting pictures and sound into programs. It appears I was too vague. I am running a Dos version on turbo c++ by borland, I want to put bmp files into a program (just place them on the screen), I am only making DOS files. I hope that helps. TTYL!
