The best unit to get is Tascam's own IF-88AE Digital interface unit. It works like a charm. It uses both AES/EBU connections(Professional) Spdif (semi-pro). I use it all the time to talk to either DATS or Workstation HD. Has wordclock in and out. GS> what with Tascams propriatary outputs. Gerry proprietary Tascam's cables attach to this device of course but the outputs as explained are standard stuff. The DA-88 really puts the Alesis line in its place. The rumor is that Tascam Adats are more expensive but the reality is that after you mortgage your house to get all the alesis add ons you will have paid at least three times what a DA-88 system costs and you would still have less features. One of the most important features the Tascam system has that is not available in the alesis system is open ended ness. The Tascam system is able to accomodate 20 to 24 bit processing which will be the norm in the not too distant future. This system will be pro for the next twenty years. It kills me all these guys buying Hard drives thinking that 16 bit will be standard for Pro and that they can continue to get pro production using 16 bit when there is an audible obvious difference in the sound quality of 24 bit. My personal preference would be to place the PZMs on thick plexiglass plates and angle them toward the performers. Not all PZMs have the same pickup pattern, since Crown introduced new models a few years back. The plexiglass and some careful equalisation should clear up the problem.
