Limiting is just like setting the ratio WAY up so no db's get CA> past. Remember compressors REDUCE dynamics. Great for rock and roll CA> thrash, but not for classical recordings. Experiment, but always ask CA> yourself "Is this helping or hindering the sound?" I'm familiar with limiting, as I'm an electronics tech... Basically, on my unit, I limit by setting the ration to infinity:1. I remember doing a live performance (auditions for the Air Force's Tops In Blue tour) where a vocalist was doing some operatic selections, and hit a note where my mixer (an old peavey with barely any headroom) almost shut itself down. I *really* needed a compressor there... I'm doing another gig soon with some vocalists who haven't had much experience with mics, so I may need it... It's also nice to have that sidechain input which I can use for de-essing, among others... -Ian ... Oh, hell!
