I think those boxes simply used an oscillator to create beat freqs. Maybe your comm system has a component going south somewhere creating a phase shift, or an oscillation, creating the flanged sound. I've on occasion used crappy PA's that had a 60 Hz hum. When the bass player would hold a note at or around 60 Hz, he would always sound out of tune. You guys don't LIKE that effect in your headsets? You can pretend you are astronauts! ... Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. --- Blue Wave/Pro v2.12 [NR] * Origin: The Cheshire Connection,USA (203)250-7148 28.8 (1:141/1810) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 200 PRO AUDIO Ref: C3I00006 Date: 03/13/95 From: ALAN ALSOBROOK Time: 08:00am \/To: BOB BLOUNT (Read 7 times) Subj: Turtle Beach Quad studio On 03-11-95 Bob Blount wrote to Alan Alsobrook... Well it sounds like your ahead of me I'm running a 486DX2/66 ISA 256 cache, 8Mb RAM, IDE drive Maxtor 7546, supposedly 13ms. Also I found one think that helped drastically, and that was disabling the virtual memory on disk. It was reading and writing the same data to the disk 2 or more times prior to using it. I had all sorts of sync problems prior to disabling the virtual memory. BTW when I was doing most of the testing I was running a 486DX33, the DX266 is a late arrival. ___ * OFFLINE 1.58 * If it ain't broke yet, let me have a shot at it! --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: Arcs & Sparks (904) 461-9687 St. Augustine Fl. Hi again Barry Yea well My board does not have automation and I To have ALWAYS had to mix by hand. I'd love to get back into doing Live sound but Havnt found to many clubs since my move to NJ The only club thats close to me that has live bands is ( you know I forgot the name) but it is located on RT 9 in marlboro. Anyway they already have staff engineers. 2 years a go I started a sound reinforcment company.but not quite enought money for insurance. I had tons of gear enough to do Nassau collisum in NY. It took 8 guys 12 hours to load everything into the warehouse. 3 weeks aftergetting my business paperwork in order I got a call 1 night from the local PD. Not only did I get hit but 2 other warehouses on the block got hit . THEY TOOK IT ALL . I almost killed myself. I could not believe I lost everything and my wife didnt make the insurance payment until after this happened. I was devastated. it took 6 years to get all the gear together. I endeed up taking over a $250,000 loss. I mean thy must have had 20 or 30 guys to hit all 3 warehouses and clean up. Just my stuff alon fit in 2 full 60foot tractor trailers. They got ALL OF IT in 1 night. I gave up live sound after that.I almost sold my half of the studio. I was so disgusted. The Only good thing was this past summer they found my Yammaha pm-3000 board. some band was playing at a club in LA. CA. and had supply problems. when they brought the board in for repairs they didnt know the board was hot. and the tech had a list of stolen gear. and checked the SN#. well I got the board back and ended up selling it.I almost wanted to give it back to that band and say good luck. well enough of this have to go dinners ready Neal Newman --- PCBoard (R) v15.21/M 25 * Origin: The Eagle's Nest *Monroe Twp,NJ* 908-521-1357 (1:107/103) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 200 PRO AUDIO Ref: C3I00009 Date: 03/11/95 From: MARV COULTHARD Time: 7:24am \/To: KELLY BOSWELL (Read 7 times) Subj: Re: "Flange" distortion Hello Kelly! Is the effect like being only a few cycles out of phase. here is how we used to originally do the effect before the electronic boxes came out. We used two very stable and accurate tape machines, usually two Nagras. Set the machines on a solid bench with about 5-6" between them. Load the two machines with one roll of tape. Spooling reel on the left machine and takeup on the right of course. We would send the same audio to both machines and then bring the audio back from the playback heads into the console. Set the machines into record at 7 1/2 ips. Try placing a pencil or other smooth stick against the tape and "streaching" it in the process for a variation in the sound. I think what you are looking for a source of your flanging is a place where a slight delay from the source is happening. Possibly going around he building a number of times. Or did someone put a video delay amp in place of an audio delay. (rather hard as the BNC connectors don't fit to well) Marv Yellowknife NWT --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: Marv's Email Bag.... Flanging was when recordists would run two exact copies of the same recording on two different machines, and put their thumb on the flange (hence the name!) of one of the tape reels to slow it down and speed it up slightly in relation to the other. It's a kind of delay/comb filtering effect, and may be caused in your headsets by two copies of the same signal being patched into the same output, or by excessive leakage from the headset into the microphone (just short of screaming feedback!) By all reports, it performs exactly like an Alesis ADAT, with some of the fucntions of the BRC, like sync (!) and some other useful stuff. It doesn't cue or lock synch any faster or slower, and all the little things that you may not like about the ADAT are also true about the RD 8, but then all the things you DO like are the same, too! There is a recent review in Electronic Musician, I think, that outlines all the differences, and apparently confirms that it IS indeed pretty much 100% ADAT compatible. If I were considering an ADAT, but needed to synch, I would buy an RD 8. --- RATSoft/FIDO v1.05 * Origin: The MIDI Clinic BBS / O.M.N. I have two Crown PZMs which I paid $300 a piece for several years ago. They are great. I have used them here in the studio for piano pickup, also for backup singers in a group. I have also used them for live PA on a closed lid piano and also on the lower inside panel as well as top panel of a studio console or upright piano both studio and PA. I have been told that you can modify the pick up to a cardioid type of pattern by sliding a small slip of paper in the little slot under the central element. -=Jim=- --- Blue Wave/Max v2.12 [NR] * Origin: |=[Bloom Co.
