DS> Is it worth the risk?? Worth taking a chance to make up some time?? DS> Worth racing to beat a speeding train to a railroad crossing?? DS> Many people think so...but, many people have been wrong. DS> So much so...that some have paid for it with their lives. DS> With most trains traveling over 50 mph, and having close to 100 cars, DS> you're looking at over 3 miles to bring that train to a stop!! DS> No...it's not worth the risk...especially when your life is in the DS> balance. So, the next time you see a train approaching a railroad DS> crossing ahead of you...don't race the train to the crossing... DS> Because, even if it's a tie...you lose!! DS> (the last line is Operation Lifesaver's Slogan). Yes, I do remember the PSA. I'm almost sure it was shown to law enforcement officers around the country as the railroads were trying to save lives. They did an excellent job in my community. Thanks for being part of it. Tom ... I am in full agreement that this topic is extremely RT> important. I may receive a lot of flak about what I am about to say, but here I go anyway. We have become one of the most violent societies on earth, with the exception of nations involved in war. I honestly think that repeated exposure to violence on television and the movies is a bad thing for many children. The violence appears to be glorified. I agree with a recent plan to rate television shows and allow parents to be in total control of what their children see. IMHO, I think that all parents need to think about reducing the violence their children are exposed to. It almost appears that some of the worst cases of juvenile violence involve children who have no sensitivity or respect for human live, and they may even kill just to see how it feels. I've had the extreme displeasure of meeting several juveniles who would fit in this category. There was no remorse and a complete absence of conscience. In short, there was no value attached to a human life. It has always given me a sick feeling and made me wonder how such a beast evolved. I can't believe that all of these children are criminally insane, rather they are programed in numerous fashions to commit their crimes. In short, I'll use data entry as an example, "garbage in - garbage out." I'm sure that the problem is much more complex than this, and I certainly don't pretend to have the answers. We may also be ignoring our children, as both parents work and may rely on day care centers to raise their children for them. When they talk about killing people, we still ignore them, and it appears that nobody really deals with the problem while it is still small. I'm certainly not all gloom and doom about kids. I wouldn't want to give that impression to anyone. The vast majority of kids are as good as gold. Others have a few problems they work through when they are young and turn out as good as gold. A few start showing violent and anti-social tendencies as young as 6. I'm thinking about an 8 year old arsonist who threatened to set his mother and father on fire while they slept. This threat was made in my presence after the parents were called to come get him after an arson spree. As it turned out, the two parents were unable to control the child, and he continued setting fires. By the age of 10, he was attempting to set his school on fire because of some discipline by one of his teachers. The school system assigned a teacher to home school the child because he was too violent to be around other children. Maybe you can guess what he will become by the time he is 14 or 15 if he doesn't receive some serious help. Receiving the help he needs is not an easy matter, as most mental health facilities are not designed or geared for violent 10 year old children. Placement was impossible unless the parents had lots of money, and they were poor. As you might guess, he is the terror of any neighborhood that the family moves to. The system is not designed for 10 year old children, and neither are the laws. As a result, the child will slip through the cracks until he is about 14. You wouldn't have room for a 10 year old, would you? Tom ... Seriously, What folks do not realize is the variety stores DS> 7-11, ez Shop Circle K, and kwik shops *probally* are held up for DS> robberies often, and usally they have a "silent" alarm. You are correct. Many stores have a variety of alarms: 1) burglar; 2) holdup; 3) panic. Those that are open all night also have a variety of problems, especially after the bars close, and the drunks start trying to find their way home. They are also trouble spots after sporting events, etc. By the way, I eat about 2 doughnuts a year. DS> Now correct me if I am not right, as I am not an LEO, But once that DS> button is pressed, officers in the area respond as fast as possible, DS> *without* lights and sirens, so the perp thinks everything is going DS> according to their plan. (my husband used to work in a shop that had DS> one of those "panic buttons" that automaticly called the police) At DS> least here in this town, as far as I know, once that button is hit, DS> cops go and respond *WITHOUT* lights, and sirens and pray to god they DS> catch the perp in the act. I can also define "ASSUME" (pardon DS> me Paul but you know me I have to be evil! :) You are correct again. Officers would not advertise their arrival on an alarm call, and it would be a priority call. "Panic Buttons" are common in most convenience stores, and they can mean just about any kind of trouble at the store, up to and including a robbery in progress. However, most robbers have learned that these types of stores are usually not worth robbing. Most of the money is placed in a depository that the clerk can't open, and the robber might get $40 or $50. As a result, most of the panic alarms are disorderly customers causing problems, and this would still be a priority call. By the way, you defined "ASSUME" correctly. Tom ...
