Yes, 7 ft is fine, stopped at a stop light. More might be slightly better if on an upsloped hill because the one in front *might* have a clutch transmission and need a little room for 'slippage'. MR> there, i was taught that as long as you could see the tires of the car MR> infront of you touch the ground you were ok at a stop light. I've got Sortof. I used to have a clutch type car, so I know on a *slope* to give more room than that. More than once, I had to put on the brake, get out of the car, and go back to ask a person to back up a bit. I admit though, most of the time when that happened, they were closer than 7ft _or_ it was a serious 'slope' involved. Sadly, there is experience in my house with stopped cars being thrown forward. Its the main reason my husband doesnt drive. When I'm finished recounting it, you wont blame him at all. In 1968, when Don came home from Vietnam, (Airborne, all the way!) he relaxed a bit and worked at a store a friend ran. Fishing tackle stuff. (Don builds nice lures from scratch and is a great person to fix your reels etc). Work started at 9am, but he likes to go in early, start coffee, relax a bit etc. So, at 7:45 am, in Miami Florida, he was driving slowly and carefully to work. He came to a child school crossing before a gradeschool. He stopped normally, and watched the kids start to cross. BOOM! Drunk driver (at 7:45am? Rare but happens). Needless to say, Don's car was tossed into the crosswalk, full of elementary children. He refuses to drive to this day. I don't have it in my heart to push the issue. When you marry a man, you take him warts and all, and you love his warts if you have any sense in your soul, because the man has reasons for them if ya know what I mean. xxcarol PS to make it topical, Don was absolved of *all* of it legally. Fact is, none of the parents even tried to go after him for the deaths. At the one good seafood place that is smoke free, there i RT> up to an hour wait for a table most nights. On Friday and Saturday, RT> you'd better have a reservation. Interesting! Everyplace I have lived in the last 10 years, seems to be different. What part of the country are you from? Cant tell from your tagline. RT> As for "designated sections"... I've been to places that had designate RT> _tables_. What the hell good is a "smoke free _table_" when the next RT> table is not? One of my favorite on-the-road places is Cracker Barrel RT> Their dining room is usually divided into three sections, two RT> non-smoking and one where smoking is allowed. The sections are RT> separated by lattice slats. For some reason, the smokers beside the RT> "wall" tend to blow their smoke TOWARD the wall. I guess that that is RT> some kind of unconscious act of kindness to the others at their table. RT> Problem is, the smoke goes through the wall into the non-smoking RT> section. Sadly, I have seen that in some places. I'm more used to California where the law (before the smoke free came in) had most establishments have literally separate AC systems and solid walls between the two locations. CS>California Law makes it all smoke-free. RT> I applaud them. Some day, ALL states will follow their example. I dont mind it too much, but I hope they dont go as far as CA did. CA even outlawed *outdoor* smoking sections, even if on the opposite side of the *building* from the non-smoking outdoor section. Tis a bit overboard... >populace smokes, and that 20% simply didnt dine out as often when they >changed the laws there. Restraunts, many of them, just couldnt survive n >almost 20% loss of business. RT> With all respect Carol, I have a problem believing that. Do you have RT> a cite to back up those statistics and the effects of the new law? Newspapers, check San Diego Tribune, 1995 (early). I lived there, saw it happen. You can see the start of it in the OCT 1994 papers. Seems to not ave been a 'boycott' but just a tendancy to not bother to eat out as often. Personally, I was not bothered by it, until they got to the point where I couldnt even step *outside* for a smoke at the sysop breakfasts (we'd chat and have fun for 3-4 hours and tip *heavily* for staying so long). I do not mind sitting in non-smoking. In fact, I insist on it if a non-smoker is in the group. Our local 'sysop/user' group meeting is held in the non-smoking section. (I duck out for a smoke if I really want one and come back). Laws on smoking in restraunts? They vary. I like the old CA version. Separeate AC type units, solid walls, and allowed to have a smoking section, if you fit the rules. You have a *right* to not breathe my smoke. You dont have a right to prevent me from smoking when the conditions make it reasonable. xxcarol --- Telegard v3.09.b17 * Origin: SHENK'S EXPRESS Norfolk VA 757-486-3057 28.8 Dual (1:275/100) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 198 ASK A COP Ref: F5G00269 Date: 04/25/98 From: BOB RUDOLPH Time: 01:09pm \/To: RYAN BAGUEROS (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: choices in amerikka RB> ... okay, now what if your daughter or nephew or sister or whoever RB> decides that RB> *they* want to smoke pot some time, will you be so forgiving of the law? I love this child - but I loath the behavior. The fact that I love her does not override the fact that there are rules from which she doesn't get exemption because she doesn't find them to be convenient. I ask because, if you had you'd know that a Glock is never cocked, and cannot be cocked as cocked is taken to mean in the case of, say, a 1911 - and there is no meaning to the phrase 'cocked and locked' in the case of a Glock because it does not reach full cock until the end of the trigger stroke. The Glock pistols are all (with the possible exception of the 18, which is never seen over here) Double Action Only, striker-fired pistols. That means they have no hammer, have the same trigger stroke for each firint cycle, and cannot be manually cocked as one would cock a 1911. 'Cocked all the time' in the case of a Glock, is an impossibility. --- AdeptXBBS v1.11z (FREEWare/2) * Origin: CopShop AdeptXBBS (1:261/3050) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 198 ASK A COP Ref: F5G00271 Date: 04/25/98 From: BOB RUDOLPH Time: 01:21pm \/To: BARBARA MCNAY (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Gang Turf BM> > GD> No one wants to get involved. BM> > Because they are law abiding people and the laws have BM> > disarmed them. Two armed gang members can control a BM> > hundred unarmed people. BM> Calling the police doesn't require arms. This is true - but being unarmed can be intimidating when everyone else about you is armed and appears to be bent on doing damage to your person. No telephone gets dialed as fast as a bullet, and no cop responds as fast as a bullet - and it is a small comfort the to person who gets killed that the cops arrived and eventually nailed someone for the crime. The reason that the six-gun came to be called the equalizer was that it made a smal person in danger of physical harm the equal of those who wuld harm him. The mere presence of a gun will many times keep things from happening. NOBODY I know whats to be involved in a shooting; no matter how right you are it changes you for the rest of your life - but if the mere presence of a weapon will delay any activity until the properly constituted authority has time to arrive, then it is all to the good. That having been said, unless you are prepared to use a weapon, you might as well resolve to be a victim. Gordon Liddy tells a story (probably apocryphal) about his graduation from FBI agent school, at which time all the brandamnew agenst received a briefcase and a gun. They were instructed to hold the gun pointed at the cieling in front of them, and to observe the size and shape of the front sight. Someone, of course, had to ask why they were doing this, and the response was something to the effect of "we have a gunsmith here who will file it off for you if you are not prepared to use it - because if you aren't prepared to use the weapon, someone will take it from you and insert it in your arse - and it doesn't hurt as bad with the sight filed off!" The desired result is to put enough of a chill on what's being comtemplated to cause it not to happen. If the chill doesn't work, and you are not prepared to go to the next level, you may accrue more harm for having been strong part of the way - the goblin has more face to regain. --- AdeptXBBS v1.11z (FREEWare/2) * Origin: CopShop AdeptXBBS (1:261/3050) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 198 ASK A COP Ref: F5G00272 Date: 04/25/98 From: TOM RIGHTMER Time: 11:38am \/To: MARK RACIBORSKI (Read 0 times) Subj: Legality of Commandeering -> Tom Rightmer - A Victims' Rights Advocate , Yeah but say your used MR> to rollin around in your 95 Corvette and you have to drive a Honda MR> Civic for months and months while the police get through all the red MR> tape to finally fix your car. He was driving to work at 4 am, on a rural road, when he fell asleep at the wheel. He ended up hitting a guardrail and flipping his car into a ditch. He crawled out of the ditch with a broken back, and flagged down a passing car. The lady told him, "Why don't you walk to the next house and have them call the ambulance?" Luckily, the next car after her, was a little more sympathetic, and they did call for help. It took him almost a year, but he has recovered very well, and is even back to work.
