From my perspective, there ISN'T a police brutality problem in this country. On the rare occasion where true unwarranted brutality occurs, it has been dealt with expediently. You may say that one case of police brutality constitutes a problem. Certainly, you are correct in an isolated sense, but to indicate that police brutality is rampant and a general problem throughout the country is an absolute fabrication. --- * QMPro 1.02 42-7029 * He does the work of 3 Men...Moe, Larry & Curly --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: CrimeBytes:Take A MegaByte Out Of Crime! This is just legalized Car Jacking, is it not? How is this difference than if I (a non sworn officer), were to come to your department "with an emergency" and request to take your vehicle to the hospital, or go after my girlfriend because she just stole money from my car? -The first would be an emergency to you if life threatening, the second situation would not, but to me it would be. Or, (as has been the case, especially with Cleveland PD) I come to your department and say "I've just witnessed someone taking a child", or, "I saw a car being stolen", do you honestly believe that the 'Sworn LEO' would go right after the person, in the first situation they would, the second they would not, at least immediately. It would go something like this; (while still at the department) 1. Did you see what they were wearing? 2. What direction were they traveling? 3. Were they in a vehicle, if so, what color, make, and model is it? 4. How many people were in sight? 5. Was there another vehicle seen? This has occurred more times than I care to imagine, and most likely is wide spread because *some* officers and departments simply do not care because "they're lazy", if it is not important enough to them to pursue, or if there is not a life in peril, they will not act. Or, if they do, it won't be in a timely fashion. *My Thoughts* Admittedly, some people (personally know of one) overly abuse the system for "b.s." crime complaints against others because of revenge of some sorts which winds up costing not only the departments time, but the person accused of such crime in terms of monetary cost. I started CC> getting a little nervous (It was not that he was an LEO but that CC> he kept the hand on the gun the whole time and I've known some CC> pretty hairy trigger fingers before). I would say that you met a rookie officer that was a little bit paranoid about the security of his gun in a crowded store, possibly someone grabbing it and using it on him. Even veteran officers have these same feelings from time to time, but they usually use a different tactic. They may rest their elbow on the top of the gun for a feeling of added security, or they may have their back to a wall or counter so they can see who is approaching them. Many officers are killed with their own guns, so there is a reason for some of the paranoia. I recommend high security holsters, only for the officers who are willing to devote the proper time for practice in using it. The high security holster can get an officer killed without the proper training and practice. I think that you asked a very good and valid question. These are the type of discussions that help build understanding between citizens and the police. Tom Rightmer - A Victims' Rights Advocate ... Book... I had been considering it for a while but MR> decided i'd ratgher make something of my life. Would you use your shirt for stopping someone from bleeding to death? That would be your property, and it probably would be ruined. Would you place a price on a human life for the use of something that belongs to you? If so, what would that price be? We already know that the cost of your vehicle is too much, however much that would be. I saw part of a news story today about an overturned vehicle on the Washington Beltway and a critically injured woman laying in the road. It was rush hour traffic and nobody stopped to help her. Everyone was in too much of a hurry to stop and help or even call for help. All of those folks who passed by don't deserve to be called human, much less a citizen. A Sgt. in the Military finally stopped and did everything he could to help her, keep the traffic off of her, and stop someone to call 911. He said she was covered with blood, and the only way he knew she was a woman was by looking at her shoes. According to the Sgt., many people gave him the finger and cursed him as they went by because of their inconvenience. Someone shouted, "get that garbage off the road." I wonder if they were talking about the woman also. This is a sickening report about the value of human life and the complete disregard for a human being desperately needing help. They call the Sgt. a hero for helping her, but this is a civic duty required by law in many places. It's also sad that we would need to consider making it the law to be a decent human being and stop to help a possibly dying person. I'm glad that you decided against a career in law enforcement. Your messages indicate you don't have the heart for it. I'm glad that you decided to make something of yourself, so what are you doing for a living? Tom Rightmer - A Victims' Rights Advocate ...
