It is good to TR> know they are in prison now. By the way, folks in prison have no TR> respect at all for these types of crimes. Even criminals have a code of TR> ethics involving children, and they can't stand child molesters. You TR> had a long wait for the justice system to work for your family. The TR> system is very frustrating for police officers also. Police officers TR> would love to tell you that punishment will be swift and sure, TR> especially for this kind of crime. Origin: 357 MAGNUM *Lawton, OK* 405-536-5032 (1:385/20) It was a bit on the lenient side due to the fact that we didn't want to put our children through the ordeal of a third trial though they were quite willing. Plus everyone figured that he would screw up soon enough. While the original sentence on its face was rather lenient the terms of the probation were far from lenient. I agree that it took a long time to get the maggot where he truly belonged, but the wait was well worth it. Times like this type of situation is when I truly have the most patience, kinda like those little Chinese guys, I have never seen any of those fellows get angry. They just bide their time and when the moment is right, justice is served. Hope no one takes offense to the way I worded the above. It's like what the Vietnam Vets used to say "Going Asiatic" or something to that effect. Or in other words, "What comes around goes around" But bottom line is that the SOB is off the streets for the next 5-10 years and if I have ANYTHING to do about it he'll serve the MAXIMUM and then some. Plus as a result of Megan's Law (One of the few NICE things I can say about Clinton) he has to register as a Sex Offender wherever he resides. Plus I found out today that while he was free briefly, he did comply with that requirement. As for the other guests (prisoners) at the resort (prison) that is a subject that I am quite aware of, I have a few friends that work as corrections officers and they have told me of some of the stories about what happen to skinners (a New England slang for pedophiles), they spend a considerable amount of time in segregation but eventually things DO happen where they INADVERTENTLY find themselves in the general population and WHAMMO they become WIDE RECEIVERS if they don't get shanked. I can understand the frustration that the cops feel as well, most of which you can thank the 7 Bozo's and Congress for. Take Care Tom and maybe sometime I will call down to your BBS in OK and see what you boys have! Maybe we should put our heads together when it comes to Victims Rights issues and maybe we can exchange ideas etc that would be beneficial to all ncerned. Neal ... Supreme Court = Seven Bozos. ... I CH> recall a town in your neck of the woods that was sued for civil rights CH> violations because an officer acted improperly due to lack of CH> training. CHARLES HUNTER I don't know which specific incident you are referring to, but I probably know what the consequences will be for the town. It will break the bank in the town, and they will no longer be able to afford their own law enforcement. They will have to ask already overwhelmed County Deputies for law enforcement services. The Deputy may be 40 miles away when the services are needed. Oklahoma has very sad and unique training requirements for police officers. A police officer can be hired and serve as an officer for a period of up to one year before he or she is required to receive any training at all. Oklahoma Police Basic is only 320 hours, the last I heard, but many of the smaller towns have a difficult time affording this. Again, many of the officers from the smaller towns either pay their own way or stop serving as an officer before the end of the 1 year. You heard it right, you can strap on a gun, put a badge on your chest, and serve as an officer in Oklahoma for 1 year without any training at all. Lawton, Oklahoma requires the Oklahoma Basic first, a 4 week orientation course, a 14 week on-the-job training course, and a 1 year probation period with assorted in-service and advanced training. I just wanted to let you know that most of the larger towns and cities do have very strict training requirements for police officers, much greater than what the State requires. Myself, being a child of the DB> 60's, don't understand what the uproar is. Kids are "dooing it" for DB> the most part, and have done so since the beginning of time. In DB> Californa a 17 year old boy and his 16 year old girlfriend caught with DB> their pants down will mean jail time for the boy... she 16/he 19 and DB> he goes into the felony tank. It is very interesting that you brought this up. Oklahoma doesn't have to resurrect the statutory rape laws, they are still on the books. Oklahoma still has a felony statute of Adultery. I don't remember an adultery arrest in Lawton, Oklahoma during my 21+ years of service. In fact, we were specifically told not to arrest for adultery. We could apply to the District Attorney for a warrant for adultery, but I've never heard of one being granted. Maybe this law became unpopular because most of the lawyers would have felony records, but it is still on the book. I have seen a few arrests for statutory rape in my county, but most of them have involved fairly large age gaps. The law requires a 4 year age gap, but I've heard of cases involving 10 and 15 years difference in age, males and female defendants. I've not heard of any cases involving hard time unless the case was non-consentual or involved other unusual circumstances. By unusual circumstances, I mean something like getting the younger person stoned or drunk first. I have mixed emotions about this law, depending upon all of the circumstances involved. I'm probably biased because I have raised a daughter and remember many of my feelings when she was younger. I've heard many of the arguments for the difference in age portion of the law and can see merit in many of the points that would be made. Example: tall, dark, suave, debonair, 30 year old male with a fancy car sweeps 15 year old beauty off her feet for no other reason than to take advantage of her once and dump her. I've heard the other side of the arguments also, like the case you mention. I've not seen many of those go very far in my neck of the woods. Many of these cases went the distance in my neck of the woods 20 years ago, and the older person actually went to prison for lengthy period of time. Cases like you mentioned here usually involve a court order for the older person to stay away from the younger person and probation. You are right, this could spark a very interesting discussion. Neal Grassroots efforts around the country are beginning to make many people start asking themselves, "What about the right of the victim for a change?" Meagan's Law is a result of such grassroots efforts. They all start from the right of one person to be heard, and people are beginning to listen. The "It could never happen to my family" syndrome is beginning to fail as the numbers of victims continue to mount in the thousands. There is a growing number of citizens who have been victimized in one or more ways who are demanding to be heard. How else will others understand unless they are heard? It is one thing to be the victim of a vandalism, a burglary, or some other property crime. It is quite another thing to be the victim of a crime against a person, especially the type of crime your family has dealt with. Other people are beginning to understand portions of the pain, suffering, and nightmare of mending a young life. I admire you greatly for your patience and again wish your family the very best. Your family will be in my prayers. Tom Rightmer - A Victims' Rights Advocate ...
