The tissue continues to be destroyed for a short time after you remove your skin from the heat source. The sooner you can cool the area, the less of a burn you are going to have. I am told that cold also causes the skin to contract, thus constricting blood flow. I am not sure what benefit this has. Any burn that I get, say from cooking, will immediatly get treatment with anything from the freezer. Save the most severe of burns, I won't even get a blister. Keeping a burn on ice will minimize the pain after the damage has been done. A bowl of ice water for that finger burn works miracles. --- DB 1.58/003138 * Origin: Emerogronican 1 BBS Wallingford CT (1:141/666) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 198 ASK A COP Ref: F2K00006 Date: 02/13/98 From: MIKE MCCANN Time: 07:39am \/To: TOM RIGHTMER (Read 1 times) Subj: Legal Responsibility "warm"... familiar with it, same thing with me, but when I got home i "did" scald myself with a real HOT shower, but still relish warmer showers. I will make sure that the firearms instructors and range master on my department gets this information. I would hope that information of this type would be put into a nationwide broadcast so that each department can do their own testing and try to duplicate the incident. My entire department carries Glock 17's (9mm), and we are just about to change to the Glock .45. We have a concrete pit that we would probably drop the weapon in from various heights and conditions (i.e.clean, dirty, induced problems, etc.). I would hope that Glock would also do extensive testing and publish the results. You are correct, the name of the game is to go home alive at the end of the shift. I understand the defensive nature of many LEOs when there is doubt introduced in an item they trust with their lives every day. It's just human nature. Additional testing on a large scale will either restore that trust or identify a problem that needs to be fixed. Tom Rightmer - Victims' Rights Advocate ... Book... One of the biggest problems has been public apathy and fear, fear to become involved. The police department must take bold action and stay on top of the problems before they can expect public involvement and assistance. "Zero Tolerance" is the term used by many agencies when they begin a campaign. Minor offenses are usually the first target of action. Panhandlers, public drunks, the disorderly, and other trouble makers are either arrested or run off, especially in public parks and playgrounds. Graffiti artists are either arrested or their work is destroyed immediately. Property owners and whole neighborhoods are organized to remove broken glass and garbage in an effort for all to have some pride in the area where they live. Officers are told to become very friendly with the drug dealers, especially the ones who are bold enough to sell their poison in the open for all to see. The officers should smile, pat them on the back, shake hands with them, and do all in their power to be very friendly with the drug dealers. The idea is to let everyone see this familiarity and create large amounts of confusion for the dealers and their customers. These tactics usually work exceptionally well. The officers even give the dealers their business cards and tell them about Crime Stoppers and Drug Busters rewards. There are several signs to look for to determine progress in the area. The first good sign is citizen involvement to assist the police. Another clue is children playing on the playground and in their yards. The good citizens in the area begin to take pride in the fact that the streets and playgrounds belong to them, not the criminals. Good citizens lose some of their fear and start calling in suspicious activity, and many more step forward to become witnesses in crimes which are committed in their neighborhood. "Zero Tolerance" is like many other action plans, it won't work without the help of the good citizens in the area. The police must first gain the trust of the good citizens and form a partnership. The team approach is what reclaims the neighborhood. Just thoughts. Even knowledgeable >RT> customers can't tell the difference by holding, feeling, or >RT> smelling it unless they apply an acid test or submit it for >RT> specific gravity weighing. RW>I don't know about knowledgeable customers but all the >pawn shops I've been have a little handheld gadget that >tells them the gold content some how. That is the little electronic gadget that I referred to in a post to John F Davis. Neat little toys with neat little prices :) Wish I could afford one. I'm sure that if the fellow I've been whining about has one, he keeps is hidden . Actually, I've never seen one used to test the difference in 14k and 14/20kgf. Unless the tester knows what he is doing, I can see how he would get a false reading. Unless the device's signal penetrates into the core of the material, it would "see" only 14 karat gold... just like the human wearing the jewelry. When testing with acid, it is important to file into the piece in an obscure place, then test the filed mark. Otherwise, the piece will test as 14k. Scam dealers have used this information to fool customers by "testing" the material they are selling. Not hard to do at all. RW>RT> It would be humanly impossible to tell the difference in >RT> "solid" 14k gold, gold filled, and gold plate merely by >RT> weighing it. You'd need specific gravity testing. RW>A good scale and a glass of water will tell a lot. I recommend the same exercise that I recommended to John. Go to your wife's jewelry box and select two similar sized pieces, one karat gold and the other gold filled or plated. Using your water glass and scale, determine the gold content in each. Its a great theory, but highly unlikely to tell you what you want to know... and even less likely that a customer will perform at a jewelry counter. This discussion has clearly shown why there are specific laws pertaining to precious metal transactions... it is extremely easy to dupe someone... in some cases, even an expert... at the point of sale.
