I couldn't agree with you more about the decay in society these days, as for me however the 50's are a little before my time (I'm a '64 model myself) But in any order though my folks came from the "Old School" and I made damn sure that I was on my best behavior growing up during the 70's and early 80's. I didn't dare to pull the stuff that kids today pull, not so much the fear of getting caught, but more like what my parents would have done to me when THEY found out. The thing that really kills me these days though is the fact that the fact I have 2 teenage sons who have a tendency to get mixed in with some rather bad crowds (and that's being POLITE) and if I try to intervene and keep them out of trouble I hear "But Dad this is the 90's" and if I try to exercise a little old fashioned discipline then the laws cry "Child Abuse" Go figure. The violence on TV I agree is just a "Tad too much" these days. But personally I think the responsibility begins at home with the parents. TR> violence on just about every channel in the 90's. In the 50's, it was TR> against the rules to say the word "pregnant" on television. If you were TR> looking for violence, the Lone Ranger was just about as bad as you TR> could find. TR> become proactively involved in their own safety and security. In the TR> 50's, every neighborhood was already involved and the police didn't TR> have to beg. TR> If you are old enough to have lived in both time frames, do you think TR> that our society has improved? The above are just a few examples for TR> comparison. You could take many other facets of our society and see TR> just as dramatic a change between the two time frames. I have lived in TR> both time frames, and I think that our society is coming apart at the TR> Tom Rightmer - Victims' Rights Advocate I don't envy the boys in blue these days with a ll of the BS they have to contend with from the "Bleeding heart LIBERALS", but one thing I have noticed is that up where I live (Manchester, NH) the PD does a pretty good job with what they have to contend with for a large city they take a small-town approach when it comes to dealing with the public at large. I have been noticing more "Beat Cops" nowadays which is something that is long overdue. I also noticed in your message that you are a victims right advocate, I give you folks a whole lot of credit in the work that you do. I could expound more on that subject, but I will have to do that in another letter. Take care and Happy Holidays Sincerely, Neal ... Catalytic converte AR>The catalitic converter was/is needed for use with unleaded gasoline. AR>In fact, that was the main reason the nozzles of the gas pumps were changed, AR>that leaded gasoline wouldn't be accidently pumped into a car that needed un AR>ed, thereby ruining the converter. AR>The unleaded nozzle was much cmaller than the leaded one. The catalitic converter is NOT "NEEDED" for the lead free gas The Lead free gas is needed for the CONVERTER The Converter is intended to burn off hydrocarbons which did not properly burn off in the car's engine. I've seen cars where the converter glows a nice cherry red. I've heard of cars setting leaves and such on fire due to the heat of the converter. In both of these cases the car was running very rich and in serious need of attention as there should not be that much in unburned hydrocarbons for the converter to convert What may make a serious difference is the Emission control computers on many cars. As they farther and farther refine the software (And yes, the hardware too to some extent) they are going to get to the point where there are no unburned hydrocarbons in the exaust. When (IF) that happens the Catalitic converters will no longer be needed But the reason for unleaded gas is that lead clogs the converters * SLMR 2.1a * Sex on TV is OK -- If you don't fall off. --- Silver Xpress Mail System 5.03H1 * Origin: The Chessplayer's Forum (313)386-7054 (1:2410/278) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 198 ASK A COP Ref: EGQ00020 Date: 12/21/97 From: JOHN F DAVIS Time: 12:49pm \/To: RON TAYLOR (Read 1 times) Subj: Law... I'll second that about the posibility of the Kid being "really Stupid" It is a rare week we don't collect yet another example of criminal intelegence..... I used to keep a list of them as a matter of fact Like the robber who crashed a party... Police officer's retirement party Or the idiot who robbed the coffee shop, there were 12 customers in the shop, all cops, at the time. Or the idiot who was stopped about 1/2 block from the coffee shop, the officer gave him his ticket, his license, his insurance and reg and then the officer returned to his assigned patrol. The subject pulled into the coffee shop and, pulling a stocking over his head, robbed the place. When more cops got there the customers were rolling on the floor laughing their s off cause it was really rather funny. The rules of this conference are a living document. They will change as we change and grow as we grow. I will always remain open to ideas echo participants have regarding the rules of this conference. These should be submitted to me via NETMAIL only at my FidoNet address 1:2630/221 or via one of my two Internet address, pharney@cjbbs.com or pharney@metronj.org. The moderators of this conference are: Paul Harney 1:2630/221 Moderator ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. REAL names are preferred in this echo. If your BBS software will not allow you to change your name, then think about signing your real name to your messages. If you are using an pseudonym and a problem arises and I attempt to reach out for you but can not contact you due to the use of the pseudonym, your access may be forfeit. Please make sure your SysOp knows how to find you by your pseudonym. 2. No profanity. It is not required to make your point known. 3. No flames or inflammatory posts. Being topically controversial is one thing but when the line is crossed and controversial becomes a deliberate attempt to raise the sensitivity of others, warnings will be forth coming. Continued violations will get the violator's conference privileges revoked for a period of time suitable for the violation. This at the discretion of the Moderator. Personal attacks on fellow conference members are neither needed, sought, nor tolerated. 4. Personal disagreements will be taken to Netmail by participants. If Netmail is unavailable to the participants, the argument will be dropped. 5. Violations of conference rules will generate a polite response in the echo for a first offense. A second offense will, where possible, result in a NetMail warning being issued to the violator and the SysOp of the originating system. Further violations will result in potential loss of conference privileges, as determined by the moderator. System turn around, where applicable and recognizable, will be considered in such cases. Please be advised that there are certain Red Flag violations that fall under common sense guidelines that can get a user's access cut immediately, for instance the use of this echo to promote illegal activity, ie, the pandering of contraband like kiddie porn, etc. 6. Discussions are to remain within the topic of the conference. The moderator will be the sole judge of what is and is not on topic. Subjects that easily fall outside the realm of the topic, ie drug laws and fire arms topics WILL be kept to how they are DIRECTLY effected by ENFORCEMENT of the law. Please remember, LEO's are law enforcers, not law makers. The moderator will make all attempts to keep the conference open but if a string is declared off topic, all conference members are expected to concede the issue and take all additional commentary to NETMAIL. 7. Response to Moderators' messages will be made by NETMAIL only, response will not be made in the echo. Discussions dealing with the moderation of this conference are off topic within the conference itself. As stated above, I am open to discussions on the conference's rules [when done in netmail] and have already changed them more then once due to input from the conference's users, for instance, pseudonyms didn't use to be allowed in the conference. If you disagree with the rules in some way, and I find your presentation and reasons to be sound, it may very well happen again. TO ALL ASKACOP PARTICIPANTS: This conference is dedicated to the exchange of information between law enforcement professionals and the public they protect and serve. The current moderator of this conference is Paul Harney. I can be reached at 1:2630/221. Policy is to try and maintain as open a conference as possible so as to allow for maximum exchange of information, while still maintaining the conference's topical integrity. Please assist in this endeavor by keeping your posts on topic and valuing the right of your fellow conference members to have an opinion, if not the opinion itself. If you have questions I am always available via Netmail to be of any assistance I can. If you want to introduce a topic you think is important but aren't sure as to its topicity, then NETMAIL me with your idea and we'll work on it together. I am also open to well thought out suggestions regarding the conference and how it might be improved. Rants though are appended to file >NULL. I very much consider this experiment in mutually beneficial communication to be a partnership we all have a stake in. Yours in that partnership, Paul H.
