Anycase, I'm this totally non-qualified kid. I do minimal bits of volunteer work with the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Canada... about 300 hours a year. I've got slips of paper that say I'm an Emergency Medical Responder, among other things. (I'm registered for this BTLS course soon, though.) I'm considering Emergency Medicine as a career (waiting to hear from medical schools...), so mostly I like to listen to the Pros. Here's a question thrown to the floor. What's the situation with Defibrillators in the USA? How common is it for Firefighters to be using them? It's very common here, in Ontario, but I've heard that it's rare in the States. Elsewhere in the world...? Both our County First Responders and the Austin Fire Dept use semi-automatic defibrillators. Then when we pull up we can just unplug their pads and they plug right into our Lifepack 11. Pretty nice deal. I'd have to say the semi-auto defibs are pretty common place in the Texas area all in all. There even was a State Bill up for putting the SADs "everywhere" and to make them common place for laypeople. Like putting them next to all fire extinguishers. It got shot down though. The device was used to restart Robert Giggey's heart after he collapsed following a dash to catch his flight Wednesday. The airplane was still at the gate, but officials said that without the defibrillator aboard, the 52-year-old man easily could have died. Flight attendants and off-duty paramedic Don Grohman were credited with saving Giggey. The Raleigh, N.C., businessman was in serious but stable condition Wednesday night, said his wife, Carmen. 9-1-1 Public Safety BBS POLICENET SAFNET LEO'S FIREFIGHTERS SAR FIDONET COMMS AMATEUR RADIO e-mail newsgroups Home of THE San Diego County BBS List(619) 669-0385 ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: San Diego's HOTTEST BBS (619) 669-0385 (1:202/911) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 197 EMERGENCY Ref: F2T00000 Date: 02/22/98 From: JOE NICHOLSON Time: 11:39pm \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Nor California Paramedics American Medical Response, the nation's leading provider of emergency and non-emergency ambulance services, has immediate openings for licensed paramedics in Monterey County, California. I remember a lot of disgruntled chatter when people around here heard about the airlines putting Fully automated defibs on board. But people seem to have accepted the idea. And St. John Ambulance up here is planning "defib" courses for laypeople as well. Seems to be still not entirely accepted. Thanks very much! -----------------------begin of forwarded message------------------------- Cologne, february 21.th 1998 Dear collegues, dear friends, in this summer I have to hold a lecture to the German fire chiefs and EMS organisators about standards in EMS. One of the topics will be, the response times for ambulance trucks around the world. Please help me and answer my questions to get an impression of response times and other structural features of EMS around the world. Please excuse my bad English 1. From which country / County / City you are writing 2. How many residents are living in your rescue district 3. How many ambulance cars you have (ALS / BLS) 4. Are physicians involved in prehospital rescue and if yes how ? 5. Who is responsible for the EMS ? City County Private company Fire Department 6. Is there a fixed response time from call to arrival ? yes / no 7. If yes, how many seconds ? 8. Is the response time a: internal standard city / county regulation state regulation federal regulation Other 9. Is additional to the response time a number fixed, how often the response time has to be met (e.g. 480 sec in 90% of the cases) ? no / yes in % 10. If there is no response time, do you think it is necessary to have one? Thankyou very much for your help Sincerely, yours Alex Lechleuthner, MD Medical Director EMS Center of Emergency Medicine Fire Dept Cologne, Germany e-mail: a.lechleuthner@ndh.com
