The NATO-led peace Stabilization Force said in a statement that close study of television footage clearly shows that the incident was not a result of any attack. "The helicopter struck an overhead cable and the flash caught on the footage is most probably caused as the cable parted," the statement said. Bosnian television in Sarajevo alleged on Saturday that the vid- eo footage of the crash indicated the helicopter had been shot down in Serb-controlled territory. But NATO said: "These reports are totally untrue and unhelpful to the peace process." The Kiowa Warrior reconnaissance helicopter was patrolling the area about 40 miles east of the capital Sarajevo before a scheduled meeting between rival Muslim and Serb leaders elected to the muni- cipal council in the contested town of Srebrenica. A Serb crowd had gathered to prevent Muslim representatives and international officials from reaching Srebrenica. On television film of the crash, the crowd can be heard cheering after the helicopter goes down. One of the two American pilots suffered a broken leg and head injuries in the crash. The second crew member survived with minor injuries. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission in Bosnia, which supervised local elections held last Sep- tember, accused Serb authorities on Saturday of trying to prevent the installation of the newly elected town council in Srebrenica. It said the authorities had organised the hostile mob that threw stones and attacked vehicles carrying senior OSCE officials and three Bosnian Moslem representatives. Bosnian Muslims won a majority on the town council with the support of absentee votes. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Malaysia Airlines says it may defer deliveries, sell aircraft KUALA LUMPUR -- Jan 18, 1998 2:08 p.m. EST -- Malaysia Airlines Bhd may announce plans next month to delay the delivery of Boeing Co. aircraft it has ordered and could sell some of its existing aircraft, the national Bernama news agency reported over the weekend. "We believe we can announce some plans after the (Moslem) Aidil Fitri festival (on Jan. 30 and 31) as to whether there will be a possible delay or perhaps adjustments to the delivery date," MAS chairman Tajudin Ramli was quoted as saying in an interview with the agency. "We are looking at a longer time frame (to reschedule)... three to five years," he said. "We have to look at the contract." Bernama also said that MAS plans to sell four of its DC-10 and one Airbus A300 aircraft, and was mulling the sale of six Boeing 737-500s. The new agency provided no direct quote of Tajudin saying this and company officials could not be immediately reached for comment. Bernama added that Fiji's national carrier has expressed an in- terest in the acquisition of two of MAS' Boeing 747-300s. The chair- man was quoted as saying the deal was expected to be finalized by the end of March, but gave no further details. The Malaysian government had announced plans on Dec. 5 to defer imports of ships and aircraft to help curb the outflow of foreign currency following a sharp decline in the local ringgit against major currencies since July. By November MAS had taken delivery of five of the 25 aircraft ordered, comprising a mix of Boeing 777s and Boeing 747-400s, said Bernama. Bernama said the chairman hinted at the prospect of MAS record- ing sharply lower profits for its financial year to March 31, 1998. MAS net earnings for the year to end-March 1997 stood at $79.6 million, compared to 320.29 million ringgit in the previous year. Tajudin said MAS was discussing the rescheduling of aircraft deliveries with Boeing and other parties. Tajudin said the airline had suffered a contraction of 15 to 17 percent in the number of passengers, and that passenger load factors had fallen to below 60 percent from over 70 percent. He said MAS used to fly around 1.3 million passengers a month before the recent financial crisis, but that had now fallen to around one million, with even the Kuala Lumpur to London route suffering. Analysts have said that Asian airlines that expanded in boom years may have to cancel orders, defer deliveries or sell older planes as the region struggles through economic crisis. Philippine Airlines moved to cancel orders for four Boeing 747-400s this past week, and Thai Airways said Thursday it might seek delayed deliveries for aircraft due this year. Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. already has deferred plans for a big aircraft order and may yet put a big batch of its current fleet on the market. Industry officials estimated Asia accounted for about 30 per- cent of the value of Boeing's order book and more than 20 percent of the value of the backlog held by Europe's Airbus. === --- DB 1.39/004487 * Origin: Volunteer BBS (423) 694-0791 V34+/VFC (1:218/1001.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 196 AVIATION Ref: F1R00000 Date: 01/16/98 From: TONY PATON Time: 04:09pm \/To: JIM DAWSON (Read 0 times) Subj: RE: TURBO COMPOUND -=> While breaking out of cloud Jim Dawson boldly told Tony about RE: TURBO COMPOUND JD> B niju-ku Lot me there! :-) \ ------------ >-==- TONY PATON / ...
