During a joint press conference Friday with U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr., R-Knoxville, 134th Air Refueling Wing Commander Col. Fred Forster, and McGhee Tyson Airport Authority Executive Director Terry Igoe and Dogwood Arts Festival Executive Director Bob Neel announced the return of the festival's air show. The 1998 Dogwood Arts Festival Air show is scheduled for May 2-3 at MeGhee Tyson National Guard Airbase. Festival officials said the show - which last took place in 1995 - has drawn crowds of more than 125,000 people. The U.S. Air Force "Thunderbirds" return to headline this year, as they did in 1995. The eight-man team flies in F-16 fighter planes that can reach speeds in excess of 1,500 mph, festival officials said. The U.S. Navy Leap Frogs, composed of 12 members of the Navy's Sea, Air and Land (SEAL) personnel, will demonstrate aerial jumps from altitudes of more than 13,000 feet at speeds of 120-180 mph while spinning, flipping and twisting in air, officials said. Patty Wagstaff, three-time U.S. National Aerobatics Champion and the first woman to earn that honor, will fly a "highly modified" BF Goodrich Aerespace EXTRA 300S. Wagstaff also is a television and motion picture stunt pilot. Numerous static air displays also are planned. McGhee Tyson National Guard Airbase spokesman Lt.Col. Art Powell said the events popularity is responsible for its return. "It was well-received and well-attended, and the Dogwood Arts folks wanted another one," Powell said. "And together with Congress- man Duncan's help, it's one of the premier events in East Tennessee." All flying demonstrations are set to be performed twice - once on each day of the festival. There will be no admission charge to attend the event. A "nominal fee" for parking around the airbase, however, will be necessary, Powell said. "At this point," he added, "We're just crossing our fingers for good weather on the show days." ------------------------------------------------------------------- Knoxville News Sentinel 17 Jan 98 === --- DB 1.39/004487 * Origin: Volunteer BBS (423) 694-0791 V34+/VFC (1:218/1001.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 196 AVIATION Ref: F1N00004 Date: 01/19/98 From: JOHN FAERBER Time: 01:49am \/To: MANUEL HOLLAND (Read 0 times) Subj: San Antonio MH> I am planning a trip to San Antonio the weekend of Jan MH> 23.
