I had one give us a command to turn left 45 degrees for ID.... and then go off the air. This happened when I was north of Barter Island, Alaska and our radar out... Shortly before 11 a.m. EDT, a Piper Arrow single-engine plane took off from Marlboro Airport, then lost altitude and crashed into a wooded area behind a house, New Jersey State Trooper Joe Lentini said. The plane burned and all four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, Lentini said. Their identities were not immediately re- leased, pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash was unknown. The Federal Aviation Author- ity and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, Lentini said. ------------- Three die in Tennessee plane crash KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - October 12, 1997 01:28 a.m. EDT -- A single- engine plane crashed into the Tennessee River just after takeoff Saturday night, killing at least three people. The Piper Cherokee had sunk belly-up in about 30 feet of water one-half mile from Downtown Island Home Airport, a small private airfield, said Norman Hammitt of the Knoxville Fire Department. The bodies of the two men and a woman pulled from the wreckage had not been identified, he said. Divers searched into the night in case there were more passengers. "A bystander said they heard an explosion where the crash oc- curred," Hammitt said. "Another bystander said they saw the plane flying very low over the water and heard the sound of what sounded like a crash or a splash." Downtown Island tower is manned only during football games when 100 or more aircraft land there during football games at the nearby stadium. Knoxville is home of the University of Tennessee, whose No. 9-ranked football team defeated No. 13 Georgia a few hours earlier. The tower had shut down just a short time before the crash. Clearences are handled through Maghee Tyson, Knoxville municipal airport. -------- No Survivors in Argentine Crash An Argentine DC-9 Austral airliner crashed into a swamp in neigh- boring Uruguay late last night during a violent storm, killing all 74 people on board. Officials confirm today the violent storm most likely caused the crash of the plane, which was en route to Buenos Aires from Posadas in northeast Argentina. Air traffic control lost contact with the plane last night after the pilot said he was alter- ing his flight path in an attempt to escape the storm. The plane crashed 185 miles north of Uruguay's capital, Monte- video. Rescue workers from Uruguay and Argentina found the plane completely broken up with remains scattered across a wide area. They said the first bodies they found were completely burned. ------------------------------------------------------------- Honduran candidate survives helicopter crash TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - October 11, 1997 7:52 p.m. EDT - The presidential candidate for Honduras' ruling party escaped death on Saturday when his helicopter crashed during a campaign stop, officials said. Carlos Flores, 46, presidential candidate for the Liberal Party, and six others on board survived after the helicopter crashed during a landing in northern Honduras. "Carlos Flores is in stable condition and being checked for a possible fracture in an area near his spinal column," the attending physician, Manuel Aguilar, told Radio America. "He also has a broken rib." The crash took place at Taulabe, about 60 miles north of the capital, Tegucigalpa. Flores was taken to a nearby hospital and later transported to the capital for more tests. The helicopter, of unidentified make, was destroyed. Campaign spokesman Tomas Lozano, who was on board, told Radio America it crashed into power cables and trees before hitting the ground. Lozano said he and Flores' wife, Mary Flakes, had suffered minor injuries. Four others on board were more seriously hurt, he said. "We don't know what happened," Lozano said. "We were really in danger of dying, but thank God we all survived." ----------------------------------------------- -- --- DB 1.39/004487 * Origin: Volunteer BBS (423) 694-0791 V34+/VFC (1:218/1001.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 196 AVIATION Ref: EEI00000 Date: 10/12/97 From: RAY MARSH Time: 08:18pm \/To: CHRISTOPHER TARANA (Read 0 times) Subj: News-753 Greetings... -=> Quoting Christopher Tarana to Ray Marsh on News-753 <=- -=> Quoting Ray Marsh to CHRISTOPHER TARANA <=- RM> I notice Taiwan is giving a dozen F5Es to Paraguay, apparently as some RM> sort of reward. The boy, Dustin Dishon, was home Saturday with his sister Sara when he saw Dennis Safranek try to land the Piper Super Cub Seaplane in the Missouri. "I saw him land, and then ... he crashed into a rock," Dishon said. Dishon followed the struggling Safranek downstream. He reached out to him with a long stick. "If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be alive," Safranek said. "He stayed with me all the time trying to get a tree limb out to me." Safranek, 48, a bush pilot in Anchorage, Alaska, took off earlier Saturday from Poplar, Mont., on his way to Florida when he encount- ered bad fog near Buford, in northwestern North Dakota near the Montana line. "The float went into the water normal," he said. "Then the right float impacted rocks or a submerged log. The plane went up on its nose and sunk." ------------------------------------------------------------------- Argentine jetliner wreckage yields few clues NUEVO BERLIN, Uruguay - October 12, 1997 1:50 p.m. EDT - Search crews Sunday had yet to find the flight data recorders that could help determine what caused an Argentine airliner to crash Friday in neighboring Uruguay, killing all 75 people aboard, including three infants. The crash left a crater 25 feet (eight meters) deep and 30 feet (10 meters) wide, and the surrounding area was strewn with debris from the crash. "The characteristics of the accident and the extremely strong impact of the plane with the ground sadly make it impractical both to identify and to recover the remains of the victims," the Argentine Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Families of the victims were flown to the site on Saturday morning, where they combed the hillside looking for any sign -- pieces of clothing, rings or watches -- that might help identify a loved one. The Austral airlines DC-9, carrying 70 passengers and five crew members, went down late Friday after a crew member reported the jet was changing its course to avoid heavy rain and hail near the capital Buenos Aires, the plane's destination. The crash is the worst air disaster in Argentine history. Officials suspect bad weather played a role in the crash. Wit- nesses said the plane fell like a fireball from the sky before slamming into the ground. The plane last made contact with Buenos Aires municipal airport about 40 minutes before the crash, when the crew said they were changing their route. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 'Absolutely ghastly' Thatcher takes potshot at new British Airways 'world images' BLACKPOOL, England - October 10, 1997 12:09 p.m. EDT (1609 GMT)- - Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher left no one in any doubt what she thought of the controversial new multi-color artworks which British Airways has chosen to adorn the tails of its jets. "It's absolutely ghastly," said Thatcher before producing a handkerchief and covering the tail of a model plane on the airline's stand at the Conservative party annual conference. Thatcher, who privatized British Airways during her 11 1/2 years in office, was appalled that the airline has replaced stylized red, white and blue British flags on the planes' tails with a collection of colorful "world images." British Airways unveiled the new look June 10, taking on what it called a "revolutionary" corporate identity. The world images, which will eventually total 50 original works created by artists from around the world, aim to present BA as a global airline. But Thatcher is having nothing of it. "I demand that it's changed immediately," said an angry Thatcher, who stepped down as prime minister in 1991, as her husband Dennis spluttered similar protests. "We fly the British flag." The British Airways supersonic flagship Concorde is still flying a stylized Union Jack, based on the flag used by Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
