It all seems to be a game of -> concentration and how much of it you use. Or how much of it you LOSE! When my guy demonstrated that he was not even a little bit familiar with how a GA twin operated, I should have turned that old squaw around and got us back to the barn, but the worse bumfuzzled HE got, the worse I got! That's NOT a prosperous situation! I was in WAY over my head, not even understandin what I lacked in experience, to say nothing of what a guy with thousands of hours didn't know. Apparently what bothered him more than anything was the feeling that he had of his butt dragging on the ground. That old shortlegged indian was scaring him since he was used to sitting up higher in the cockpit on the ramp than we got on downwind! He learned to LOVE the King Air while I never flew it because I was scared of so MUCH iron around me. He also loved the PT-6's! We did hire another guy a little later that was simply amazing. He came with no recommendation at all. Only had about 300 hours IN AIRPLANES and flew the dang Aztec like he'd been born in it. Had ALL the right reactions! Great presence of mind, and like you said CONCENTRATION! Couldn't navigate worth beans, but once we showed him where everything was, he did great. Like me, they made him fly umpty-jillion flights in the right seat for peanuts, but by the time he had his 500 hours IN twins, he was twice the pilot I ever was. I liked to fly upside down too much! My heart was never really IN smuggling! -> same. He later flew with the Skyblazers (The USAFE Acrobatic Team, -> painted and looked like the Thunderbirds) that was the team that -> preformed all over Europe. He was a decorated Combat Pilot in VN so -> go figure. Jim, I like to think that it takes a different thought pattern, or maybe I mean thought process to fly big iron or little. Some can fly both. Maybe those are the pilots who can concentrate on WHATEVER's at hand.... As far as I was concerned, the Aztec, or maybe the Queen Air was just about all the airplane I could say grace over. We had an Excalibur conversion that I wanted to fly BAD! But, I didn't FEEL right in big airplanes so I didn't fly them competently and of course the boss wouldn't LET me fly them. But the little hair trigger boogers suited my temperament much better. The mistakes might be serious, but they weren't such BIG mistakes. Like a C-46 out of control is a LOT of airplane to gather up! A Pitts can get ALL over the place, and bite itself in the butt so quick it'll make you cry, but it seems like getting it straightened out happens so much quicker too! I 'spect Joe Norris knows what I'm talking about and can SAY it better too! ^..^ --- FidoPCB v1.5 beta-'j' * Origin: BOO! Reminded me of many years ago when I took a fellow who worked with me who had been with the first USAF class that went through flight training with all turbine equipment. I took him up in the Aeronca 7AC and he was much the same as your experience. Like you, I ended up making the first landing. His last experience had been F-84s. --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: The Grotto - Arvada, CO (303) 421-7186 V.32bis (1:104/251) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 196 AVIATION Ref: EBC00052 Date: 07/01/97 From: RAY MARSH Time: 10:15am \/To: STANLEY LONG (Read 0 times) Subj: Flyers... You hit the nail on the head about concentration on WHATEVER's at hand. I remember DC-10 Co-Pilots coming back to fly Captain on 727 and always trying to round out high. It was because they were just mechanical and not much as we call "hands". I got recurrent in C-172 last year and hadn't flown it in about 5yrs. It seemed like it was my second flight of the day and not 5 years ago. EH>As far as I was concerned, the Aztec, or maybe the Queen Air EH>was just about all the airplane I could say grace over. (I wish I had known that before I started) My wife took one Flight Lesson then got to fly the 767 Simulator and decided that if she couldn't fly the 767 she wasn't going to fly anything. (GBG) I flew the Christian Eagle II last month some and that's a handful also. Not hard to fly just ask you to "Pay Attention". Know your equipment, know yourself, don't exceed your capabilities and always expect the worse and you probably will be around for awhile. ___ X CMPQwk 1.4 #1684 X "Flying without a flush toilet is BARBARIC" --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: The Politically Incorrect!
