It was a helleva hot-rod and about a year or so ago you, Jim and I chatted a bit about them. About 6 mos. ago I was browsing thru some stuff at a gunshow and passed a table filled with aircraft books, mostly military. There was a book on A-26's there, and it had two whole glorious chapters on the On-Mark B-26K. I could kick myself for not buying it right then and there, but as gunshows tend to go, they wanted $50 for the book, which I thought was way too high. All I can recall is that (according to the book) all of the B-26K's delivered by On-Mark to the ARVN Air Force stayed in Vietnam. By the time they were replaced by other aircraft they were wrung out tired exhausted airframes. Pity. What the book didn't mention was if any of the B-26K's converted by On-Mark stayed in the U.S. Bound to be some still around, like the one near you. Are you sure it's a -K model? Would love to get a picture of it, Colorado Gas have a phone number you know of? ... Luke! North of here at Grey Bull, Wyoming, is an outfit that fights forest fires with old and aging aircraft. The company is known as Hawkins & Powers Aviation and they use many round engine birds inlcuding C-97s, C-119s (they have more than a dozen ex-Canadian AF C-119Gs), a C-82, P2V-7s, DC-6s (C-118) and a B-26. On the turbine side, they have an ex-USN EP-3 and an ex-Spanish Navy P-3 along with several ex-USAF C-130A & Bs. At one time they had more than a dozen ex-Canadian Lockheed PVs. Very interesting place to visit. This AM, operations are underway near Vail to recover munitions from the crash of the A-10 about 2 months ago. Site is at 13,000 feet and there is still a lot of snow about. When munitions are recovered, searchers will try to ascertain the cause of the strange crash. Last week, another F16 (GD-Lockeed) fighter had an APU failure on the ground at Florennes AFB/Belgium; when fired, the APU "gazed" both the Crew-chief and a trainee working alongside with him. This is the American built fighter that had many many problems with hydrazine pollution (as well as poisonning peoples'blood system) The USAF uses this APU on this electric jet to provide Electrical and hydraulic power in case of an emergency. The plane is still flying around even if the Governement knows Hydrazine is a carcinogen. Think what happens to civilians in case of a crash. On the Florennes TLP'apron last week, we had all brands of F16 US' from Aviano, Partuguese, Belgian, Dutch, Danish and Norwegian... Who on earth knows something about the "carcinogen properties" of Hydrazin? What actually does USAF about that APU system? Howdy Bill, first ones were series 200 for 79 pax with RR Spey engines. Series 300 were fitted with Spey Mk.511 engines and higher AUW, Series 400 were almost similar but were FAA certified for a 2 man crew. Series 500 were enlargened for 119 pax with Spey Mk.512-14 engines. Series 475 were based on 400, had greater wingspan plus Mk.512-14DW engines for hot and hi ops. The hushkits were introduced in '74, in '75 they licensed Avionane Bucuresti to build 475's and 500's. At a rate of 1 (spelled: O N E) a year these delivered from '82 to '88 nine pieces to Tarom, in their own series 495 (identical to the 475) and 560 (based on the 500). Next came Dee Howard with another engine (RR Tay 650) for the 400 series, but it never got certified. Latest I know is Romaero (Romania) building 20 birds based on the Tay engine for Kiwi Airlines. If production rates are still the same these could be all delivered around 2010 CU NeXT msg Louis LHFG: !!!dnuora yaw rehto eht gninnips si ksiddrah yM !PLEH --- IOS-Mail 0.91pl9 eta * Origin: Fly BEARBOARD, *the* Atari BBS in Holland!
