The combination of altitude and high temps (95F) was too much. You might say density altitude got him. Sunday AM, Yeltsin did not return to the hotel after the meeting but instead went straight to the airport and departed. The whole meeting was a farce designed to provide plenty of global BS. On the other hand, I got to see several planes that I would not have otherwise wihtout the meeting. --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: The Grotto - Arvada, CO (303) 421-7186 V.32bis (1:104/251) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 196 AVIATION Ref: EAU00017 Date: 06/24/97 From: JIM DAWSON Time: 06:46pm \/To: JIM SANDERS (Read 0 times) Subj: RE: TWA 800 I would agree tht the key question is the ignition source. My former employer (Ford Europe) flew them -- still has one in exec configuration. There aren't many places they can go now, because of the noise (even with the hush-kit). They need bypass fan engines to meet the latest noise regs, but there aren't enough of them flying for it to be worth anyone's while to develop one. So, they are rapidly disappearing. I suppose they will stay in out- of-the-way places for a while. Strange machines: always land with a bang (product of the T-tail, the chief pilot told me), and the wing is a large solid lump. Well, you should be at least surprised, but you should have enough time to do something about it. I went up in the .Sim last night and tried it again. Made a standard ILS approach to SYR runway 10, and when the DME hit 5.5 I shut the engine off completely. Lasted about 3 seconds before I augered into a shopping mall. Only by cleaning up everything immediately after I cut the engine was I able to avoid an accident, but I still had to hold the gear up until just before the threshold in order to make the runway.
