In the last few days I have been talking via email with a handful of Opus veterans and arrogant hacker types in Taiwan, Portugal, United Kingdom, USA, Switzerland and Norway with a view to organising a new Opus release sometime in 1997. Tonight I received an email response from Wynn Wagner III (the copyright holder) giving his permission for mounting such an effort. He also wondered whether anyone was still interested in Opus ... a valid enough query. So, before I and others invest significant effort in embarking on such an undertaking, now is the time for *you* to make your presence felt. A short message mentioning the following details would be very helpful: * Version of Opus you are running =or= name and version of your current BBS software. * Frontend mailer being used (if not Opus). * Echomail processor (if not Opus). * Your current operating system (eg DOS, OS/2, Win3.1, Win95, WinNT). * Your network operating system, if any (eg Windows, Lantastic, Novell, Banyan Vines, OS/2 peer). * Your model of PC (XT, AT, 386, 486, 6x86, Pentium). * Amount of RAM. * Whether you have written an Opus utility. * Whether you have been an Opus alpha/beta/gamma tester. * Your _preferred_ operating system (for future plans). * Your Internet address, if any. TR> Tonight I received an email response from Wynn Wagner III (the copyright TR> holder) giving his permission for mounting such an effort. He also TR> wondered whether anyone was still interested in Opus ... a valid enough TR> query. Hey Wynn? Can you hear me speaking through Trev's monitor? Short answer: HELL YES!! Longer answer. Way back when, before I'd ever heard of FidoNet, Opus was 'the' BBS. Fido is now suffering a decline in sysop and user interest due to this thing called Internet. It is -possible- to give Fido a Really Big Boost, one that it needs, by offering the user and sysop a truly state of the art interface. I don't know if you've looked into this, Wynn, I've heard that KA9Q can do it but haven't tried, but if you could induce Opus to respond to a PPP connection and serve HTML, I can virtually guarantee folks'd be piling back in droves. More via email. TR> Stop! No! Don't ask - it'll be ready when it's ready :-) Say, Trev, when's it, ummm... Oh, I see. I know you are right about the problem having come up before, but I can't remember what the cause/remedy is either. And I don't even have the FAQs anymore. It does seem to me though that quite a few of Opus problems could be 'fixed' by a combination of unpacking a new copy of the fossil and opus.exe, and recompiling the prm, plus renaming the sched.dat and creating a new one (at least to see if that is what is causing the problem). After that I remember other programs, usually TSRs, interfering with Opus caused some of problems. I was going to ask if the stacker vol could be flaky, but I guess if you are tossing incoming mail it can't be that. --- timEd 1.10+ * Origin: SoundProof Point, Pittsburgh PA (1:129/26.2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 195 MEADOW Ref: E2200003 Date: 01/31/97 From: STU TURK Time: 09:14pm \/To: JAN MURPHY (Read 0 times) Subj: problems with OpEd following up a message from Trev Roydhouse to Jan Murphy: TR> Possibly you've set your clock ahead recently.
