AM> Apparently NW 4.X has much quicker mount times. During on of the Brainshare sessions shortly after Netware 4 was released, one of the developers mentioned that when reviewing the mount code, they found that when a 3.x volume is mounted, every deleted file on the volume has it's time stamp updated. No one could figure out why this was done, so it was removed in Netware 4, leading to much faster mount times. Guess this says if you have 3.x volume with few deleted files, it mounts much faster that a 3.x volume with lots of deleted files. framsey@goodyear.com; CIS 71631,1032 - CNE, CNA-4, PE --- EZPoint V2.2 * Origin: -- A Point on Pine Lake (330)-796-3146 -- (1:157/603.70) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 194 NOVELL Ref: E1W00008 Date: 01/26/97 From: FRANK RAMSEY Time: 08:55pm \/To: ALL (Read 5 times) Subj: Rules of the Fidonet Novell echo Title: Novell Moderator: Frank Ramsey (1:157/603.70) Last Updated: 24-Jun-1995 Rules: 1) This echo is for the free exchange of ideas, comments, and information regarding the Novell NetWare Operating System. But after the system boots, and loads SERVER.EXE the system reboots. I removed everything from the config.sys/autoexec.bat, but that doesn't work. The system is very basic, with no strange things attached. It has 4 Mb on board. Is this system not good enough or is there something else. Anyone? However, since you are using one, the file ES> server is the single most important part. I think without knowing what he is using the server for it is not proper to say he should be using a peer to peer NOS. He *could* be developing NOS specific software, or using an application which requires a dedicated server. Then again, I may not have seen the entire quote of his message so I may be shooting my mouth off for no reason. :) ES> My file server serves 150 nodes on a Wide Area Network (WAN) and the ES> utilization usually stays around 5 to 10 percent. Why? Because I have ES> fast SCSI hard drives, a EISA NIC card and 72 Megs of RAM. It runs ES> quite well. It could also be that your users use local applications and only access small ammounts of data on the server. I'll bet I could put some applications on your network that would STOMP your system. Try re-indexing 2 GB database files and see if your utilization doesn't shoot to the roof. :) Low utilization doesn't necessarily mean you have a ultra tweaked network, it simply means it has low utilization. Back in the days of 486's I used to get into alot of arguments with people about whether to use a 486 DX 50 CPU or a 486 DX2/66 CPU. They argued that 66MHz was faster than 50MHz. I argued that internally the DX2/66 is accessing RAM (NetWare's core performance factor) at 33MHz instead of true 50MHz.
