Actually, Netware will compress ZIP files. Login from MS-DOS Prompt within Win95 is not affected. The error is a mapping or path error during login which manifests itself as "unexpected error ..". If I rem out path statements in autoexec.bat and/or config.sys, the error will not occur. I want my path statements. Obviously there is a file which is the repository of the Sn=C:\* information which is being used for 95 Login. Not even a removal of the existing client and a re-install is effective in purging these error conditions. I use Grep to search across a broad selection of files with no positive results. NodeInfo v1 was reviewed and recommended by PC Magazine (Network Edition, June 28th, 1994 - "NodeInfo Solves a Fundamental Problem"). To quote the reviewer, "The simplicity of NodeInfo is amazing; the fact that it is the only application of its kind is doubly so. ... NodeInfo's connection-monitoring features are a bargain for any LAN -- large or small." NodeInfo v2 has been significantly enhanced and expanded upon. You may or may not have enough memory, (going up to 64 Megabytes isn't terribly expensive or difficult), but you may also have to check that memory is being registered correctly. Assuming that you have an ISA bus or VLB SCSI card, try the following: DO NOT load ISA-based disk drivers in STARTUP.NCF DO "SET AUTO REGISTER MEMORY ABOVE 16 MEGABYTES = OFF" in STARTUP.NCF DO "SET RESERVED BUFFERS BELOW 16 MEG = 200" or some suitable number in STARTUP.NCF DO NOT have AUTOEXEC.NCF in SYS:SYSTEM DO have AUTOEXEC.NCF in C:\SERVER.312 DO: FILE SERVER NAME XXXX IPX INTERNAL NET nnnn LOAD ISA/VLB SCSI DRIVER ABOVE16MEG ; (check the comand line options for your SCSI driver) REGISTER MEMORY 1000000 XXXXXXX ; do REGISTER MEMORY 1000000 2000000 for 48 Meg of server memory MOUNT SYS then anything else IN THAT ORDER (your SCSI driver should be loaded before the REGISTER MEMORY command unless you can confirm with your SCSI controller manufacturer that the driver can be loaded safely after registering memory). Disk corruption can occur if you load a SCSI driver above 16 Megabytes that was not designed to be loaded above 16 Megabytes. Or, for example, our c:\server.312\startup.ncf: LOAD C:\SERVER.312\PATCHES\312PTA\PM312 PMLOAD C:\SERVER.312\PATCHES\312PTA\ SET AUTO REGISTER MEMORY ABOVE 16 MEGABYTES=OFF SET RESERVED BUFFERS BELOW 16 MEG = 200 ; required by Backup Exec SET MINIMUM PACKET RECEIVE BUFFERS=1000 ; 400 recommended for MPR and 1000 recommend for use with 100 Base-TX ethernet c:\server.312\autoexec.ncf (with 64 Megabytes of main memory): FILE SERVER NAME GROVER IPX INTERNAL NET 2 # BUSLOGIC DRIVER LOAD BT31X PORT=330 INT=B NUMLUNS=6 VERBOSE OVER16MEG REGISTER MEMORY 1000000 3000000 MOUNT SYS SYS:SYSTEM\AUTOEXE2.NCF sys:system\autoexe2.ncf: # file sys:system\autoexe2.ncf Fri 15/11/96 LOAD MAC load conlog maximum=100 load nfs mount all ; Network driver LOADs and BINDs are initiated via ; INITSYS.NCF. You should see the response "Memory successfully added". As always, back up your startup.ncf and autoexec.ncf, (and Netware volumes particularly if you're haven't done it recently or are changing the disk driver load command). Hope this helps. While I can't offer any specific advice, it is usually recommended to run the tape (or a CD ROM) from a separate controller than the drive. Sometimes, when the tape unit takes a while to respond because it is busy, it can affect the performance of the hard drive. This _sounds_ like the same sort of problem. We used to run Arcserve 4, and when loading the tape drivers up it would often slow the server for 30-60 seconds enough that users reported problems. Some fine tuning and reconfiguration fixed that up a bit, though we still try to avoid loading the NLMs during the day. One problem was our use of 2742 EISA controllers for the disks and only a 1542 ISA for the tape. Richard --- Msgedsq 3.20 * Origin: Internet: jary@sydney.DIALix.com.au (3:711/445)
