It is called "Novell NetWare Web Server", and if they sell the British edition of Ziff-Davis publications' "PC Magazine" anywhere around where you live, a time limited trial version of Novell's Web Server, complete with all the documentation, was included on the CD taped to the front of the September '96 issue. After changing, our Windows 95 machines were JS> able to function. However, our DOS workstations could not see the JS> server anymore. That's because the upgrade probably changed the IPX frame type from 802.3 to 802.2. Your DOS/Win 3.1 workstations were set to only see the old (802.3) frame type, while Win95 defaults to Auto mode, and can see either type. You can fix this by simply adding a second BIND line to your Autoexec.Ncf file below the existing BIND command, binding the IPX protocol to both frame types. JS> Someone told me that for them to work, all I have to do is change JS> the settings of the workstation's network card. We are using JS> 3com's Combo network card. Don't have to reconfigure IPX.COM? JS> We are just using IPX.COM,NETX.COM to get into the network. You should seriously consider upgrading to Novell's VLM client kit. If you do, get the latest one from NetWire or Novell's web site. The client kit included in the NetWare 3.12 distribution is obsolete, and should not be used. JS> Btw, I've noted that the ethernet frame that is being report by JS> MONITOR is Ethernet_802.2. Is this correct? Yes. 802.2 is the new default frame type for IPX. But, as I mentioned above, you can bind both frame types to your Ethernet card. JS> When I tried to get more info from MONITOR, it resulted in a severe JS> error that had the server asking for a diskette to store the error. JS> Resetting the server was the only option given. It will take more than one floppy, as the option provides for dumping all of the server RAM to floppy on an Abend. This is generally pretty useless, unless you are going to debug the core dump. NetWare 3.12 will keep crashing on you until you apply the current patches. Check out Novell's web site, or NetWire on CompuServe. The file PATLST.TXT tells you what patches you need. 312PT9 and LIBUP9 is probably a bare minimum to get by. Since the server runs most the BBS stuff MT> where reading is more than writing. Is there a SET command to MT> implement this? The fundamental difference between reading and writing files on a NetWare server (or any other brand), is that when you read a file, you must wait while the server gets it from disk (unless it is already in cache), but when you write a file to the server, it simply has to cache it as it comes streaming in across the wire, and can then write it out to disk later in the background. There is no way to get around the physical realities of this. My only suggestion would be to add as much RAM as possible to the server, which will up the odds of the file you want already being in the cache. If you have a lot of users on the server, you can use console SET commands to tune the process timing and the number of service processes running.
