The Mercury gateway will translate to/from SMTP mail adequately, but it is not a sendmail daemon, so it is best to have a Unix/Linux machine running sendmail do the actual communication with the remote Internet mail servers. Other than the end users picking up their mail through their local account, email is generally not "collected", but "pushed". PW> TH> 2. Winsock.Dll is a shim above the TCP/IP stack that extends the Windows API with the nessessary functions for a Windows program to communicate over the Internet pretty much as if it had Berkeley sockets (from Unix) available to it. While all the implementations of Winsock looks the same from the Windows side of things, their bottom end is custom fitted to particular TCP/IP protocol stack implementations. Don't get confused by the fact that all implementations carry the same name. Winsock.DLL and the underlying protocol stack must be installed as a matched set, or it simply won't work. Sure. You can have as many servers as you want, as long as the serial number embedded in SERVER.EXE is different on each machine. If you try to run the same SERVER.EXE on more than one machine on the same LAN or WAN, the machines will notice, and you will get copyright violation messages once a minute until one of the machines are removed. You can only use the same SERVER.EXE on more than one machine when you have an Enterprise Licence disk from Novell. Novell generally only supplies these to large, corporate customers with a lot of servers. The rest of us have to buy a fresh distribution kit for each server we wish to install.
