Well the Documentation comes with 3.12, At least in my experience so it should either be on the CDROM or the set of Floppies that came with your 3.12 software. My Docs came on The CD so I do D:, install, and the menu comes up and asks me if I want to do a minimal, partial or full install and it then goes and loads the access programs to my hard drive and creates the icons for windows ccess. Then You read the readme file and follow those directions. Fairly simples stuff like putting a SET NWLANGUAGE= ENGLISH statement in the autoexec.bat and copying the et.ini to the \windows directory and editing the ET.INI to chang Z: to whatever drive contains your DOCS D: or F: or whatever.. That is for the ELECTROTEXT version of the docs. later issues had a dydnatext versuion or some such thing that I have no experience with. Good luck :-) JMC --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Intelligentsian 1 908 774-3953 (1:107/410) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 194 NOVELL Ref: DEC00022 Date: 10/05/96 From: JAMES MCCOY Time: 06:11am \/To: SCOTT PARKS (Read 5 times) Subj: Subject:pcx screen's w/novell 3.12 > Bill Crawford wrote in a message to All: > BC> I remember, on another job I used to work, that our server > BC> would load a PCX (low graphics 300x200) Welcome screen each > BC> time a user logged in for that days activity. > Novell has a built in menu system if you want ANSI type graphics. > I believe it's *MENU or SMENU which is a takeoff from Saber Menu. > There is also DOUG MENU for third party SW which is what we use. You can display an ASCII file in the Login Script with: DISPLAY path\filename You can find an ANSI/ASCII editor such as TDRAW on most BBS's and use it to create Ansi/Ascii/AVP screens. Yes, but you need a separate license for the second server or you will get some sort of an annoying message. A runtime license (2 user) is good enough for the second server. Of course you need to quantify "use these 2 servers at the same time" Consider 100 user license on SRV_1, runtime license on SRV_2. All login accounts on SRV_1, Supervisor and Guest accounts on SRV_2. File storage and applications such as word processing and email on SRV_1, with Communication applications such as a Modem bank and an SAA gateway on SRV_2. Users login and use SRV_1 for normal use, but the applications on SRV_! are services that are useable across the network without logging in to the server on which they reside. I just completed and passed the fourth test in my CNE program (Advanced Admin). I noticed that many of the questions in this test were asking information about what seemed to me to be trivial information regarding system administration as opposed to asking relevent questions about the day-to-day management and operation of a network. I had three questions regarding parameters in the NET.CFG file. That's 20% of all the questions asked of me (they were easily answered but that's not the point). I had another question asking me which were valid parameters used in the CDROM.NLM. Another regarding PBP and LIP? Are these used as much as Monitor and Install of which I had one and no questions, respectively. I would have thought that these tests would be geared more to testing one's knowledge of what it takes to actually manage a network. I did not have to answer any "What if..." questions to test my troubleshooting ability. I would have thought this would be a common question area to test to see if you knew what to do under certain circumstances. That, to me, would be more of a test than knowing which obscure parameters go in the DOS Requester section of NET.CFG! I believe that these tests contain a pool of 500-700 questions of which a handful are taken for your test. But still, I think there should be some criteria to make the applicant answer questions which are more germain to everyday operation of a network. Just my .02. Any other opinions? comments? And, no, I'm not complaining that I passed the test. ;) Just disappointed that I didn't feel my knowledge was really tested. Whatcha think? Seems the same amount of work to me. You have to visit the workstations the first time, or at least have a script that folks run. I have never tried this, but I wonder if it will create a number of interesting admin issues. I use PREFERRED SERVER = XXXXX. I do set context to the same location as the server. If that is so, then CX will not work, no? The SYS volume mapped is the one in the context of the workstation. For NETX clients, it's the server they logged into. For NDS clients, it's either the one you logged into by LOGIN XXXXX/USERID or the first one to respond in the org. You can use MAP S1:=%FILE_SERVER\SYS:PUBLIC. You can also have different login scritps for the various servers in the same context. framsey@goodyear.com; CIS 71631,1032 - CNE, CNA-4, PE --- EZPoint V2.2 * Origin: -- A Point on Pine Lake (330)-796-3146 -- (1:157/603.70)
