UN> after a backup? The drive is brand new, the tape is new. UN> Conditioned more than 24 hours to the operating environment. ED> Tape tension. Tape media, like railroad tracks, expand and ED> contract with temperature. But tapes also stretchhhhhhhhh. They need to be retensioned to the proper level or the data may be unreadable. The better class of hardware being discussed later do this automatically. The QIC 80 does too but the narrow tape seems to suffer far more than the capability of retension to correct. UN> I have grown suspect of the QIC-xx/Travan formats and thinking UN> of shifting to DAT/DLT as Frank recommends. QIC 80 is unreliable as all get out. Travan is an extension of the same "throwaway" consumer hardware. DC6000 is VERY, VERY reliable. The Conner ( now Seagate ) QIC drives have a duty cycle of 95% - I've seen plenty opf 4mm DAT fail at that level. The 525MB Archive Viper is an "industrial" drive. With compression it gives 1024mb +- and Netware likes it given the right software. Most notable about DAT is the speed of file restore. It isn't any faster than the Viper on backup or compare but the Python can find AND restore "a" file in a flash. If a full tape volume is being restored there is no advantage to the DAT unit over the 1/4" cartridge. Then we have the Exabyte 8xxxx series. For every admin who hates them, you will find one who is thrilled with them. The top of the line is the DLT drives. Both media and drive are at the top of the price curve. You will need a scsi adapter for DC6000, DAT and DLT. I have a couple of nice "packages" available, call me at (416)251-7478 to chat.
