I've also seen a case where the print servers were set on "AUTO" for a frame type, and when a stray machine sent out the wrong frame, the print server would lock onto the odd frame type and force netware into routing between the two frame types instead of using one on the entire net. He should check that all machines and servers are locked to the correct frame type. Having ONE using the wrong frame type can increase the load on your wire by 50% (two packets generated for every one received), not to mention the server impact from routing. I agree that the segment should be monitored and analyzed to find the actual problem(s). - Gordon --- MegaMail 2.10 #841:Poem line 2: Violets are blue, --- Alexi/Mail 2.02 (#10000) * Origin: EMail Connection, Oakland Park, FL - 954-563-5941 (1:369/9) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 194 NOVELL Ref: DBA00005 Date: 07/04/96 From: LOREN OLSON Time: 12:25pm \/To: MATT BEDYNEK (Read 6 times) Subj: Collisions MB>Hello All! LO>Well I have sort of the same system except I have 3 machines hooked up to the server using Novell 3.12. But, I have no hub. If two machine go for the printer which I use the capture command on, then it will slow up for sure. I am told I need to have 16 meg's. of ram on the server. I only have 8. But, it does work and work well so I figure why fool around with it. I use the server for printing, and for a place to save files created by the 3 computers attached to it. I have no machine that is actually running a program that resides on the server. Guess that's where people would figure I need to boost the server's memory up to 16 meg's. I have to laugh hard. I had asked for some help earlier this year about reinstalling Novell 3.12 on my server. The man I trust the most who is also a CNE did not want to give any free advice (can't blame him), and did not want the job as he is really busy this year so far anyway. He told me if I just read the manual and followed everything with close detail I would have it reinstalled and up and running in no time. He was more than right. In fact I enjoyed the process so much, I have reinstalled Novell 3.12 2 extra times just for fun. It really is not that hard if you take the time to read up on it. Though I have no interest at all in becoming either a CNE or a CNA. I have enough work to do, without adding more to it. --- * PW * --- InterEcho 1.07 * Origin: World Data Network Washington, DC metro area (703) 758 1:109/236) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 194 NOVELL Ref: DBA00006 Date: 06/29/96 From: MATTHEW BOWEN Time: 07:59am \/To: ALL (Read 6 times) Subj: HELP-directory space stats on vol1: extr07:59:3606/29/96 pm.waw.pl!uw.edu.pl!ict.pwr.wroc.pl!nerd.apk.net!news.uni-stuttgart.de!uni-reg ensburg.de!lrz-muenchen.de!informatik.tu-muenchen.de!Germany.EU.net!howland.re ston.ans.net!newsfeed.internetmci.com!in2.uu.net!brighton.openmarket.com!decwr l!news.PBI.net!usenet From: mattdbowen@aol.com (Matthew Bowen) Can you help? I'm running Novell 4.1 with two physical HDDs each as a volume. sys: and vol1:.... The vol1: is IDE/400MB/250MB free space/.... A physical netware volume is being reported as having unreasonablly LOW directory space available. At one point the drive would not allow a file unerase to take place anywhere on the HDD. The volume statistics appear way off. vol1: statistics showed 99% full?, total = 254464, and avail.= 935 ***** the statistics above were reported through nwadmin- -vol1:-details--statistics. I suppose the statistics pie chart indicating 99% means % full. Has symptoms of the following: Initially I was getting insufficient memory messages when trying to copy or rename a file on the vol1:. If I removed a file, I could then add a file. ***Very much to do with "file unerase". I removed some data from the vol1: and it had allowed more directory entries to be added, but limited. With all data removed from the vol1: the statistics still showed the above 99% figures; maybe due to refresh ?? but there was nothing there to purge. I put the same data on the sys: volume and the sys: directories statistics were 62%, total=15872, avail=6262. Hummm.... I deleted and recreated vol1: and restored the data to the vol1: and the directories statistics were 82%, total=3840, avail=678. **I've been able to add data to the vol1: but the %%% percentage is increasing. Current stats. are 93%, total=13312, avail=862. Do you have a constructive comment or suggestion?
