Our NT expert replies: He needs to manually define a DNS server in the TCP/IP configuration. many terminal servers won't assign that via PPP. To do this, you just have to goto the network control panel, and select protocols, then click on TCP/IP that is bound to the Remote networking adaptor, and then select properties. One of the tabs at the top of that window will say DNS. From there, just define a pair of DNS servers. If he dosn't know who the servers are, he'll have to ask his ISP. I will also add to his comments that "phony" IP address may be normal in certain situations for your own address and that of your gateway/router. In these cases, "0.0.0.0" is a magic flag for "get this address dynamically." I should also explain that PPP server giving you DNS addresses is a non-standard Microsoft extension, and it only works if the server is also NT. In most cases, you do have to enter this information manually based on what your ISP tells you to do. On the other hand, NT and 95 use the same extension to the PPP negotiation, so your NT client should work if your ISP supports this function for 95 clients. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: F2E00002 Date: 02/08/98 From: SCOTT PARKS Time: 08:27pm \/To: GUS STANISLAUS (Read 3 times) Subj: Internetworking Gus Stanislaus wrote in a message to Mike Bilow: GS> Under properties for the TCP/IP protocol, it shows phony IP GS> addresses. Fake IP's are only for internal use which might be OK for the NIC and a Proxy Server but the modem needs a real one _or_ have one assigned dynamically by your provider. They should also give you a DNS host that you can plugin. You also might have to put in a Gateway (your provider) but it's been a long time since I've done it with modems. --- GEcho 1.11+ * Origin: (1:343/70) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: F2E00003 Date: 02/06/98 From: NATHAN MALYON Time: 10:27pm \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: Modem-Sharing Does anyone Know of any Modem-sharing programs for Win95 using TCP/ip or IPX (or any other protocol that i could install from the win 95 CD) preferably bug-free/freeware but shareware/trialware will do and where to get it cause i need to share an internal 33.6 modem between two PC's not for internet but for BBSing and has to be compatible with normal communications programs cya "Hey Wait A Second, Ivanova *IS* God" - Kosh 1 Starfury, 2 Starfury, 3 Starfury, RUN Babylon 5 : The Future Ain't What It Used To Be JediAvenger@Hotmail.com ... Diagnostics indicate a physical connection, multi-meter - all is OK Software does not communicate intelligibly, but does generate a lot of 'shared' faults. Cards show as RealTek, and the drivers are mounted. Both computers request Domain Name Servers as part of the startup process, even though they are supposed to be local. I have setup as a WINS and tested OK, this is now disabled; but will be enabled again once the local side is sorted out. The reason for the WINS is that half the organisation is in Gloucester and our half is in Liverpool. We tested the WINS through to the engineering server at Jodrell Bank. I feel that it is a simple configuration problem, but the paperwork is limited in this area. Chris Green ...
