It happens at all levels ... although in a SERIOUS network you usually buy a Server package with enough built-in to cover your expansions. Swapping motherboards is left to the workstation. For $3-5 thousand you can get a REAL server with DUAL-SCSI, Hot-Swap, bootable CD .... etc. Scott Parks sparks@helix.eskimo.com --- GEcho 1.11+ * Origin: Helix BBS - Support National Public Radio (1:343/70) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: EES00000 Date: 10/21/97 From: JEFF DUNLOP Time: 04:47pm \/To: CHUMA AGBODIKE (Read 4 times) Subj: Server knocked out. How do you fellows on large networks stop CA> something like this from bringing down your SERIOUS networks.?? We don't try to change motherboards on production servers and put them back online unless there's a large window to work with. As for upgrades, we generally use HP, Compaq or IBM servers, where the upgrade path is through a processor board or overdrive processor. It's extremely low risk, very fast to implement and very fast to undo if anything is even remotely suspicious. Damage I wouldn't worry about. The larger issue is expense of connectivity. Let's see...one card in the server, purchase an Active Hub, two cards left for workstations. Now you have two workstations that can hit the server at the blinding speed of 2.5Mb/s. (alibi, from a LONG way away) I think you'll find that Ethernet cards are just to cheap to warrant playing with those antiques. That's just MY opinion. Good luck with your project though, HTR --- . It's usually used where distances exceed the 90m Cat5 limit or where electrical machinery is likely to cause excessive interference. /| / neil.croft@pillarbox.coracle.com / |/eil =o) 2:250/410 @ fidonet http://osiris.sunderland.ac.uk/~ca5cru/fido/pbox.html --- * Origin: The Pillarbox BBS +44-1709-517224 (2:250/410) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: EES00004 Date: 10/21/97 From: DAVE SHINER Time: 10:34pm \/To: JONATHAN HUNTER (Read 4 times) Subj: Arcnet MB>Jonathan Hunter wrote in a message to All: MB> JH> I've got three Arcnet cards (SMC) lying around here, that MB> JH> I'm itching to play with - just for fun :-) MB> JH> What kind of cabling do they need? The physical connection MB> JH> on the cards themselves are BNC plugs (exactly the same as MB> JH> 10Base-2), but I have heard that they need 100 ohm cable or MB> JH> something similar?? For 3 stations you'll need what is known as a "passive hub". It's basically 4 93ohm resisters w/one lead soldered together to form an X shape and the other leads each go to the center conductor of a BNC female end. Then connect all the BNC shells together (usually in a metal box) and you have a hub. Looks like this: -------------------------- | | BNC--^93ohm^-\ /-^93ohm--BNC | X | BNC--^93Ohm--/ \-^93ohm--BNC | | -------------------------- <---Square Metal Box You can hook up 4 stations to this, for more than 4 you're supposed to buy an "active hub". At that point I would replace everything w/10baseT Ethernet! It should work w/any coax for short distances. --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Boneyard!
