I have a win95 system with a 32 bit card and a dos 286 sytem with a 16 bit card. The server is on the win95 system. I am having a real hard time trying to get the dos system to recognize the NIC and to communicate with the network. Booting up the server, and then running lsl, the odi driver, and the vlm on the dos workstation system doesn't seem to do anything. The server isn't recognized. In addition, I have tried running the diagnostics program on the workstation NIC and it reports that the cable is faulty - but i have tried two different cables, the latest being a Thin Ethernet Coaxial cable. I have configured the NIC via software to specifiy the BNC Thin Ethernet connection. I have also tried a "simple" Win 95 peer to peer connection, by installing the microsoft network drivers on the Win95 system and then downloading the os client from microsoft and installing that on the dos system. The win 95 system recongizes itself in network neighborhood but does not recognize the dos system. Any suggestions? Am I doing everything right? Is there any step I am missing?? Questions: 1) Is the dos system missing anything? Currently it is configured this way: in autoexec.bat, it loads: lsl.com driver.com (driver of nic) ipxodi.com vlm The net.cfg file specifies the correct irq and port being used (irq 15, port addres 300) and specifies the correct driver. The workstation NIC is a DE -220 Series ISA Ethernet 16 bit NIC. (This is my second card, the other one was a generic ethernet ne2000 compatable card too and it didn't work either, giving me other but similar problems. I gather that after I run "server" on the server and it is in console mode, I am supposed to be able to boot up the workstation and chance to the "f:" driver. It won't do this. 2) Is there any simple fail proof program I can run to at least test the two cards and see if they are communicating? The system it will be running on is a 386 DX40 with 4 megs ram (i CAN put more if it really needs it, but 4 was all i had laying around, along with a handful of 256k's :) ), but not sure of the hard drive yet - maybe 100 megs? and probably MFM =) the network will be between that system, and an os/2 warp connect 3, and win95 system, as well as another one that will be either win95, or dos (it's broken, hard drive is in on warrenty, once it comes back, i haven't decided what to use yet). The server will probably also function as a print server, with 2-3 printers (probably only two, as i now have two proprinters (one II and one XL) and an epson stylus color.. i'd like to at least have the epson, and then maybe the XL. For software, i've been reccomended to use Sambia as the server. So which version should i be looking at, in the way of ease of use (for basically a complete novice to *nx), but the best for network applications?
