Yes, but you probably don't want to know what it is. :-) 60 D Z = ---- * ln - 1/2 d E where: Z = characteristic impedance E = dielectric constant of insulating material (air = 1.0) D = outer diameter of dielectric (and inner diameter of shield conductor) d = inner diameter of dielectric (and outer diameter of center conductor) and "ln" is the natural logarithm. In C programming notation, this would be: Z = 60.0 / sqrt(E) * log(D / d) WH> The reason is, I'd like to use it for 10Base2 ethernet (low WH> budget, got coax free). Is impedance on ethernet very critical? WH> It seems pretty high quality stuff - could be cable TV coax, WH> but I'm not sure. Yes, impedance is pretty critical. Generally, you are only going to find three impedances which have a similar form factor to RG-58 Ethernet coax: RG-58 itself (50 ohm), RG-59 (75 ohm), and RG-62 (93 ohm). If you find a bulk spool, especially from the television or video industry, it is almost certain to be RG-59 of little use for Ethernet. Lynx is available for DOS. There is actually a whole Fidonet echo, DOS_INTERNET, devoted to the subject of using the Internet from DOS. Besides, you only need an FTP client to download those files. It is a convenience if you have a web browser, but hardly necessary. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: EBI00002 Date: 07/13/97 From: TOM MOELLER Time: 12:17pm \/To: JAMES HOLDERMAN (Read 5 times) Subj: Network? Yes, if you've got a Unix shell account, they usually provide a text-only web browser called Lynx. I use it on my antique XT machines with no problem. For graphical browsing under DOS, I've heard of (but not tried) a shareware / freeware program called Arachne or something similar. You still need some way to connect to your internet service provider, but it apparently behaves much like the windows-based browsers. Not sure of the computer requirements to run it, but I think it'll support low-end (pre-VGA) graphics. The server is nothing special, just an old 486 66 DX2 with 6 gigs of storage. I did try once a while back to install what was supposed to be ide cdrom support. It never did work though. Is there something I could try now days for installing a Funai ide cd rom drive? Other than that, I have found Novell a pleasure to use. I have no inclination of changing to anything else. Take care.
