What say you? 2:210/20 has been running V.everything for 2 years now :-) 2:210/21 is the ISDN node (ZyXEL Elite 2864I). With the 3Com/USR thingy, I only assume that there will be more integration between network managment, access hardware (modems etc.) and the rest of the products produced by these two. Of course there are models and products that overlap, and there will be cuts and transfers of technology and knowhow both ways. The whole infrastructure of LANs and WANs and even GANs will be more integrated, and all components will be treated as the network. The networks are still the bottlenecks, but that is being gradually taken care of with hefty switches for LAN backbones, based on ATM technology. Not entirely ATM as the medium, but cheaper, fast ethernet for distance transports, and ATM as the back-backbone (inside switches, between swithes etc.). --- BBBS/2 v3.33 How-D * Origin: BarCode BBS - now with ISDN at 47-67061044 (2:210/20) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: EAM00005 Date: 06/09/97 From: KRIS O'SHEA Time: 01:34pm \/To: ALL (Read 6 times) Subj: Thanx Hi! I strongly disagree that moving the printers to a different segment would be preferred to an upgrade to 100-TX. The math just doesn't work out. Word processing documents average to less than 50k printed per page. Assume 12ppm, printers running non-stop. That's 10k per second, which you ought to agree is negligible. I've done traffic analyses of JetDirect cards where non-stop printing averaged 3-5 network packets per second. I agree, A couple months ago had an opportunity to "make a executive decision" and with the bean counters/computer equipment buyers all away on vacation and leaving behind a departmental move to happen by itself I purchased a 24 port 8 way segmented switch with 2 100mbps inputs for the servers and slapped it in ignoring the little voice in the back of my head saying "they will want big numbers, buy a 100bt". When the bean counter/computer buyers returned they found a very happy little department, and could not argue with the decision due to the outcome, in fact I've set up 2 more departments in similar fashion. Initial cost of such switches are generally not looked upon as a forward move because of the small numbers, 10 vs 100, 100 will always win in bean counter circles.
