You can often reference the network resource directly through its UNC name, in the format \\SERVERNAME\RESOURCENAME. In general, drive letter mapping is a convenience for software which has limitations on the length of a path or which may even be too old to see a path, but is not necessary. PC> I know that with Linux the problem is gone, so some info PC> about Linux networks would be also apreciated. A Linux server running Samba can look like a network server to standard NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP clients, including Microsoft LAN Client for DOS (which is free for downloading), Windows for Workgroups 3.1x, Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2 clients. In this case, the server resource can be synthesized into a Unix directory tree, even if the data actually resides on different olumes. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: E3W00014 Date: 03/27/97 From: MIKE BILOW Time: 11:09pm \/To: DAN MIKKELSON (Read 7 times) Subj: Question... There are two Windows 95 clients for NetWare, one from Microsoft and one from Novell. These give you integrated access. Windows 95, while it does sort of run above DOS and does preserve the exact 16-bit architecture from Windows for Workgroups 3.1, also has a lot of VxDs which effectively provide 32-bit protected mode services. Therefore, you tend not to need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT references to enable networking. The native Windows 95 networking is considered to be NetBIOS over NetBEUI. There is an option to use NetBIOS over TCP/IP insted. In large part, this is the same as Windows for Workgroups, but the configuration is accomplished very differently using graphical tools. Older Macs had LocalTalk (fast serial) connectors, but the newer ones should have EtherTalk (Ethernet) connectors. If you have hardware connection capability, then you just download the NetWare Client for Macintosh from Novell. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: E3W00015 Date: 03/27/97 From: MIKE BILOW Time: 11:18pm \/To: ERNEST HINTZ (Read 7 times) Subj: Needed Info Ernest Hintz wrote in a message to Pedro Cardoso: EH> Lantastic does a fine job in that it sets up subdirectories EH> per CPU: IE: CPU with 21 CD-Roms plus bootup EH> harddrive, ONE Drive letter on the LAN.
