Any suggestions? > Reliability is also a key issue regarding this upcoming > purchase, any fast recommendations there? If speed and reliability are your only criteria then you would be better off using one of the CD-Rom simulation products which are around. Hard discs are very cheap these days, so buy a 2-4Gb drive, stick it on the server and, using the CD-Rom simulation software, copy the CD-Rom to the server hard disc. This way it will be accessable at hard disc speeds, using the server's cache and will use less than the full 650Mb of space. Reliability will be that of the hard drive. Speed will be that of the hard drive as well (2-8Mb/sec). One thought though, if you are using 10Mbits/sec ethernet to connect to the server, what's the point in using anything faster than a 4x CD-Rom? You can't push data down the Lan any faster than about 800Kbytes/sec anyway and only then on a good day with the wind behind you. Cheers, --- GEcho 1.11+ * Origin: RAR .. You should not use the old monolithic client under any circumstances. Use the newer ODI stack, even with a NetWare 2.2 server, if you are running DOS 5.0 or later clients. You may need to manually override the frame type in NET.CFG to Ethernet_802.3 for NetWare 2.2 compatibility. The old client has several serious incompatibilities with DOS 5.0 and later. First, NETX queries the operating system for its version number and does different things accordingly, and DOS must use the SETVER TSR to lie to NETX. This practice was continued in DOS 6.x, but the old client should be replaced. You could elect to use the newer VLM client with NetWare 2.2, but that would be more trouble than it is worth. Using the ODI NETX will suffice. With the old IPX/NETX system, the link hardware address was read from the hardware and is not copied into the file. Only the I/O port address and IRQ were configured into the IPX/NETX utility. Your real problem is memory management. The old IPX/NETX system makes certain assumption about DOS memory configuration that became invalid when DOS 5.0 introduced the "LOADHIGH" and "DEVICEHIGH" facilities. DOS 6.x makes an even bigger mess with its introduction of MEMMAKER. You are using grossly obsolete software that has so far been working entirely by coincidence. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: E1U00001 Date: 01/22/97 From: MIKE BILOW Time: 04:37pm \/To: PEDRO CARDOSO (Read 7 times) Subj: Win95 & DOS file sharing Pedro Cardoso wrote in a message to Mike Bilow: PC> Don`t know if you have already received this message, PC> meantime my old host is gone... A domain name server (DNS) converts symbolic names, like "RS.INTERNIC.NET," to physical IP addresses, such as "198.41.0.5." All TCP/IP operations which use symbolic names, such as web browsers, depend on this. Sometimes systems will come with a default DNS address for some public machine somewhere on the Internet. This will work, but can be much slower than using a DNS machine closer to you that is maintained by your ISP and can also waste a lot of public network bandwidth. You should generally use the DNS address recommended by your ISP, except in very rare circumstances. (If you are running Unix or OS/2, then you might run DNS on your own machine.) JS> He also gave me a gateway address. I set it up under tcp/ip JS> properties, but as yet i can't see any difference it may have JS> made. An IP gateway, in this context, is the machine to which you connect when you dial in. It has a physical network address called an "IP address." If you connect using SLIP, then you must configure your system manually to pick up this address or information will never leave your machine to go out onto the network. If you connect using a more sophisticated protocol such as PPP, then this information is usually exchanged automatically for you. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: E1V00002 Date: 01/25/97 From: MIKE BILOW Time: 12:22pm \/To: NICHOLAS COAD (Read 8 times) Subj: Lan client Nicholas Coad wrote in a message to All: NC> Does anyone know where exactly the Microsoft Lan Client for NC> DOS can be found? Yes, provided that you configure the client for NetBIOS over either NetBEUI or TCP/IP to match the OS/2 machine. The MS Client installs IPX by default, so you will have to change this. Also, if you use NetBIOS over TCP/IP (TCPBEUI), then you will have to configure the client for an IP address manually, since OS/2 Peer will not act as a DHCP server. You must also set the NetBIOS workgroups to agree. By default, the MS Client expects the workgroup to be named "WORKGROUP," while OS/2 Peer expects it to be named "IBMNET." You can name it anything as long as it is the same across all machines. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: E1V00003 Date: 01/24/97 From: JOSHUA SMALL Time: 05:32pm \/To: ALL (Read 8 times) Subj: Various net stuff..
