You don't need to write an answer to me - in firmware v1.10 my dialtone detection works just fine again... >[Begin E2864110.Rln]< Release Note on Elite 2864 Version 1.10 Dec. 22, 1995 1. Fixed modem bugs: 1) Improper remote configuration: The local modem can not read or write the remote modem's profile on connection. (Note: Remote configuration is not inter-operable between an Elite 864 and a U-1496 series modem. The Elite 2864 has more S-registers and ome S-registers have different meaning.) 2) AT&T6 (initiate remote digital loopback) does not work. 3) Fail to recognize the dial tone of some PABXs: During dialing, the modem reports "NO DIALTONE" when the dial tone is not a continuous signal (with ON/OFF cadence). 4) Incorrect LED indication of dialing, handshaking and retrain: The V32b LED does not flash on and off for 1/2 second each to indicate that the modem is dialing. Neither do the V34 and V32b LEDs flash on and off for 1/2 second each to indicate that the modem is in handshaking or retrain. 5) "ATM3" does not work: With the "ATM3" command, the dialing tone is still heard from speaker. 6) Type 1 security function does not work (the *G1 and *G2 commands). 7) Does not support up to 50 passwords in security function: For example, in *G4 setting, the modem is not able to detect any password at location from #10 to #49. 8) Unable to recognize ring signal on some bad local loop lines. 9) Incorrect repeat dialing function: When bit0 of S38 is set, the modem will not dial the same number again while the modem reports "BUSY" after dialing. 10) Incorrect cyclic dialing: When bit3 of S44 is set, the modem will not dial the second number while the modem reports "BUSY" after dialing. 2. Fixed fax bug: 1) Incorrect LED indicator: When "AT+FCLASS=6" command is entered, the V34 LED turns off in multi-auto mode (AT&N0). 3. Fixed voice bug: 1) Sometimes the modem hangs after issuing to finish playing voice. 4. Add new features: 1) Set the dial back timer S64 for security call back function: (default=0, in seconds) With level 2 security, the answer modem will disconnect the line if the password has been found in its pre-stored acceptable list. The answer modem will dial back the phone number corresponding to the dial-in password, when the dial back timer (containded in S64) is reached. If the content of S64 violates the PTT regulation, the dial back timer will be automatically set to the value defined in PTT regulation. S64 can be used to control the dial-back waiting time to avoid dialing back too quickly that the calling modem's line is still busy. >[End E2864110.Rln]< Over and out Gert S. Lynge(l) ... The problem may be specific for Denmark - but I don't GL> know much about dialtones in different countries ;-) The problem must be specific for the _ZyXEL Elite_ in conjunction with your specific telco switch. I'm still running 1.08 (because fax reception is _broken_ in 1.09/1.10) and have never had that problem. My telco switch is an old analog one (as you may have guessed from the nodelist :-)). ᥣ ண, venlig hilsen, Seva CompuServe: 73112,3634 Internet: dramak@aau.dk --- NoerreBro'nx+ * Origin: Cyrillic support for your PC. Anyways, I am running a pre-release I'm an NC, and I did it. None of the non-EC calls I've gotten in years have been "legit" until this last week, when a youngster with an RPI modem applied for a node number. I had to make special arrangements for him to connect with me. I don't know what the situation is in your area, but around here non-EC modems were almost extinct until the damned RPI garbage became popular briefly. As a SysOp, it Personnaly I'd suggest that you recommend that all those vFC only users upgrade their modem to v.34 before they effectively become 14.4 modems. Zyxel is by no means the only company to make modems without vFC. Out of all the best modems on the market, USR is the only one to support vFC.. Even Hayes (who where one of the best manufactuers long ago) which was one of the two companies that developped vFC has dropped the protocol from their newest models (which are based on an AT&T chipset). RC> would be very nice to support these modems. We were told RC> earlier that ZyXEL would have V.FC ready in January/ RC> February, if not, ZyXEL, again, is lying their ass off. Zyxel never once said that they would support vFC, they said that they'd consider it. Of course it would have never been given any serious consideration since it would cost too much to liscence and code while it would only be used by a very small market segment, and Zyxel is having enough troubles with their modems as it is. vFC would have pushed the price up, would have delayed the release fo the modems even more, and it would end up causing more bugs to fix, taking longer to fix important things like v.34.. The reason why Zyxel USA is behind others in their firmware that they officially support is because they actualy take the time to do some testing to make sure new firmwares don't break more things then they fix. All the 1.05x, 1.07, 1.08, etc. firmwares that were released in other countries but not for Zyxel USA were considered Beta firmware versions in North America, while most international distributers just release any firmware. FWIW, if you can find a newer firmware being released from another distributer, it will work in a modem using the US/Canada country code, but jsut don't expect any support from Zyxel USA for problems using that code..
