You just sparked by thirst for knowledge! Actually, it's going to take a lot longer than I thought. My wife and I just closed the deal on our first house, and we need to get ready to move. That means the BBS will be off the air in another week or so, and the intervening week will be spent packing. In the meantime, I would be willing to bet your local library has material on networking and TCP/IP (all of mine got packed already). You may want to check with them. Best of luck! ==Bruce ... There is be no difference in throughput, all other things being equal and assuming you are using conventional hardware. Since a 10Base-T concentrator is really a multiport repeater, it is possible for some expensive and high-end smart concentrators to have multiple internal channels, but such a thing would be absurd on a 5-user LAN. -- Mike --- * Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 193 LAN Ref: DAC00001 Date: 06/06/96 From: JAN CEULEERS Time: 05:33pm \/To: KUANG QINGXIN (Read 8 times) Subj: cablings I quote Kuang Qingxin: KQ>> Both analog and digital and this part is from the switch KQ>> down the lines to the end user phones, let it be a for KQ>> conversation or data communication. I haven't followed the whole thread (most of the earlier messages have already scrolled off my system), but I do know of a system where analogue and digital signals are transmitted on the same physical copper pair: ADSL (and VDSL). When you look at the spectrum of such a line, a tiny band from 0 to 4kHz is reserved for voice (telephony, including the ringer voltage), while 2 further bands are used in the higher frequencies: 1 for the digital uplink and another for the digital downlink. A particular system I've seen a presentation of (that is: I don't know whether this also applies to comparable equipment from other manufacturers) allows the analogue telephone signals to be recovered from the transmission line by means of very straightforward analogue passive components, meaning that if the digital part of the setup goes down (intentionally or not) you can still make phone calls. They are [were] manufactured by DIGITAL. They have an assortment [and I'm not kidding] of jumpers most 3 pin select from W1 to W5, W6-8 being 2 pin, W9 thru W14 again being 3 pin select, and W15 being 2 pin. The card supports BNC [thin wire] and an 8 pin circular connection of some, as yet unidentified type [kinda looks like a small version of a keyboard pinout on the motherboard], and has link and transmit lights. Does anyone know if these are usable NIC's for a network and, if so, what the jumper settings would be [I take it they set the IO address and IRQ] and if they require a driver [what type?] to be used with either Lantastic, Novell or NT or if they are best put in the old, unusable hardware container here.
