LN> Unfortunately, it seems somebody is renaming the files somewhere. There's a good reason for it. When a normal new customer first time calls to a support BBS and downloads he's new firmware, the second thing he tries is to upload it to modem. ZyXEL can't unzip it. So, we need to make them realize this one Z means ZIP, or it needs to be mentioned in every description (normally they got lost), or we need to distribute them without packing (E2864IE.200). You can make your own desicions, but I believe .ZIP is the best way. * KWQ/2 1.2i NR * frank@icon.fi * --- PCBoard (R) v15.22 (OS/2) 10 * Origin: ZyXEL BBS * ISDN * 11Gb online * (2:220/666) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 116 ZYXEL MODEMS Ref: CGZ00017 Date: 12/26/95 From: KARI TIIHONEN Time: 11:02am \/To: FLEMMING DANIELSEN (Read 1 times) Subj: V.FC FD> Does somone know if ZyXEL have plans to use this standard in the FD> ZyXEL Elite series ? I've been working with JS> Has anyone else seen this, and if so have you learned anything about JS> the problem? My E2864 will hang just about any time online. Won't respond to any typed command, but will hang up when I press the D/V switch. Sometimes Terminate will lock up because of this, then I have to shut it down. I can't say for certain it is the modem, tho. I installed Terminate 3.0 with my E+, then upgraded to the Elite. The lockups started shortly after that. My big beef is that I have yet to have a 28k8 connect with any place that I call. The best I have done is 26k4, but it is usually flakey. I also get a lot of FCS errors; 230 is not uncommon in one session. FRN retrains happen a lot, and I usually get a few full retrain requests. I also get the odd disconnect without warning. ATI2 gives me "FRMR received". Beats me as to hat that is. No mention of it in either manual. Lately I don't even connect on he first handshake attempt. It usually takes 3-5 attempts, and I end up with a 16k8 or 14k4 v34 connect. I think I'd rather have v32bis connects at that point. I was really frustrated using v1.04 firmware, and each successive upgrade has not shown any improvement for me. v1.09 is currently in use, and still the same performance. And with each new firmware release note saying "improved v34 performance", I actually had my hopes up. I am working with a local sysop to try and figure out what is happening and f I get anything relevant out of it I'll let you know. ... When I made the above statement I was assuming that you were using the voice portion of Zfax, are you using something other than Zfax to use the voice functions of your modems... If so can please describe as much as possible about this program, ie does it use XMS memory, DPMI, etc. Get back to me with above information. Out of all of the best 10 modem manufactuers around, there is a grand total of ONE that supports vFC (USR). All the others are v.34 only. It's only in the cheap crap market that you find vFC. In any case, Zyxel was slow enough as it is getting their v.34 modems out and not getting them working, do you REALLY want them to spend another year developping a dead protocol? Not to mention the fact that it would push the cost of the Elites up by about $100-$200 a piece in licensing fees and development. Zyxel would have to develop vFC on their own, every manufactuers that supports vFC, except USR, just bought a Rockwell chipset which is why they have it without the development and licensing cost, and has enough resources that they can develop vFC without a significant price increase.
