I'm Edgar < KB 8 QEU > I have an ICOM 2AT with the BNC connector "side" pins worn out and the other night when I checked in the BLACK DIAMOND net the transmit button was stuck in transmit mode and I pulled the battery case off to keep the 145.370Mcs repeater from timming out. When I placed it back on the radio was DEAD! and wont come back up! Being on SSD it was the only radio I had. Does anyone know what happened and how to repair it or how much it costs to get it repaired? The transmitt button has been kinda funky, When I turn the radio onto its back or the opposite side of the XMT button it would key up and also sometimes it would do it when it was sitting up right. (It could be a copy-cat). The main jammer hereabouts has a dual II>band, probably a mobile, with crossband repeat, and has used it to lock II>up both the 444.175 and the 147.06 machnes by crossband repeating when II>the link is on: set it up to crossband repeat and walk away. The first II>person that keys either repeater sends it locks up both machines, one of II>which is the main 2M machine for the county, and carries probably 90% of II>all repeater traffic here. One way to partially handle this is to set the squelch tails on the repeaters to be very short. Then, install a drop-out timer on the repeater(s) which will kill the repeater(s) transmitter for a few seconds about once a minute. Adjust the drop-out timer so that the repeaters off time is long enough so that the jammers HT will time out when the repeaters shut down. It won't eliminate the problem entirely, but if the ham signal is strong enough into the machines input, it'll override the jammer for the duration of the hams transmission. After the QSO ends, the jammers HT will keep the machines locked up only until the drop-out timer cycles again. Most repeater users will put up with the short drop-out interruptions since they will have the machines back again, at least partially. Hopefully, the jammer will see that his efforts are going unrewarded and go away. Here's the question of the week....Other than the fact that a j-pole looks so neat on your tower, What is the real benefit of it? I have always been told that odd multiples of a 1/4 wave required no special matching sections when built over a 1/4 wave radial. To prove this to myself, I built a 3/4 wavelength over 1/4 wave radials (drooped 45 degrees) and it matched VERY good! Will the same apply to a 5/4 wavelength version? If so, how much gain can I expect? Thanks for all responses!
