I got 2 Hamsticks for 10 meters and mounted them end to end horizontally. Voila! A cheap rotatable dipole. mounted at about 35' I had a 1.1 to 1.5 swr across most of the band. I took 2 mirror mounts and bolted them to a length of mast and secured the center conductor to one mount and the braid to the other. I then came down about 2-3 feet and wound 4 turns of coax at about 6-8 inch diameter. Then fed it right into the radio. At such a low altitude, it does seem to be very directional. Gonna try 20 and 40 meters also. Will post results as i get more exposure to this antenna. Cheap, easy and (apparently) effective and very compact. 73 and Happy Holidaze! de W0TLO John --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 188 HAM TECH Ref: EGI00000 Date: 12/12/97 From: HOLGER GRANHOLM Time: 11:14pm \/To: IVY IVERSON (Read 0 times) Subj: Sat tracking info? That was the major reason for the new Jammer finder post re-write. The idea of using APRS for DF-ing a jammer is something new for me,so I have been doing lots of reading on it in the docs that came with the software and some tesing with a couple of other amateurs here who are trying to set-up a mini DF group using APRS. The post will be in three parts with the last part being on APRS DF-ing sing the DOS version of the APRS software. I should have it finished sometime this weekend. SB> Hello all you Brilliant antenna experts!! :-) SB> I recently saw a j-pole antenna that ground radials on it. SB> Any idea why they would do this? I think it was being used as a scanner SB> antenna. Stan if the J-pole "goundplane" radials were 1/4 wavelength it would help to improve the omni pattern of the antenna. Although the J-pole is supposed to be an omni antenna radiating equally in all directions,it can be "aimed" by facing the stub (the J element ) in the main direction you wish to talk the most. The radials are being used to add a groundplane underneath the J-pole and to improve its radiation pattern to a more omni one. For fun try rotating the J-pole to point/aim the hook of the J element in a direction you can normally hear only weak signals and see what happens to the recieved weak signal. You should see the weak signal increase in strength as the J is slowly aimed at the source. --- GoldED 2.42.G1219 * Origin: VE3SJN....Moderator....HAM_TECH (1:163/506.4) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 188 HAM TECH Ref: EGI00006 Date: 12/13/97 From: ROB DENNIS Time: 12:25pm \/To: PAUL WILLIAMS (Read 0 times) Subj: YAESU FT-212RH:MODIFICATION PW> The rig is currently modified for CAP use. SB> Any idea why they would do this? I think it was being used as a SB> scanner antenna. Hmmm... there is no need for radials on a J-pole! That's one of the beauties of the design. It's all above the base. The only counterpoise it needs is in the short "J", which is actually a matching section. The only reason I can think of to have radials on it would be if it were either multiband, which isn't necessary, since most monitoring activity is either around 150 or 450 MHz, which is the third harmonic of 150, and J's work fine on 3rd harmonic. (I have used my 2 M J-pole on 70 CM with great results). The only other reason I can think of to have radials on a "J" is to make people THINK it's a better antenna than a "straight J" so they can get more money for it. KC5BFA DE KB9QPM 73 Ivy ...
