The DDRR Antenna The DDRR (Directional-discontinuity Ring Radiator), vertically polarized antenna....The DDRR illustration in the 1967 Radio Amateurs Handbook shows two wire circles, the top wire being an open circle and the bottom as a closed circle. One end of the open circle attaches to the bottom circle as H in the formula. The feedpoint is X distance from the open wire attachment, fed with RG-8/u, shield to bottom circle. The illustration also shows a grounded point on the bottom circle, which means it is attached or laid on the ground. Not required as the antenna we made was grounded by the vehicle body. Length (circumference) around the top (open) or bottom (closed) wire, in feet, L = 252/f(Mhz) (IE; 64.7 feet for 3.9Mhz).Height, or spacing between the two elements; H=8.5/f(Mhz) (IE; 2.2feet at 3.9Mhz).The feed point distance, X, is given approximately by X = 28/f(Mhz).(IE; 7.2 feet at 9Mhz.) My notes from the experimenting we did (c1969) on 11 meters shows the wire lengths L to be 9' 3 5/8", the spacing H to be 3 3/4" and the feedpoint X at 12 3/8"..the experiment was figured for 27.1Mhz...:) This antenna was mounted in the back of an El Camino. It performed very well, although it had a high wind resistance and needed to be guyed so it wouldn't blow over at 65mph...This kind of antenna experimenting is what brought me to Amateur Radio in 1970...now that I could work VHF and UHF, the antennas I built were much easier to handle...And you guys thought CB'ers were nothing but skip talking truckers and hillbillies... In reguards to "Tweaking" those RS 49MHz walkie talkies. I've ordered manuals for a few of the different models and..... I don't see any way (Short of major surgery new PLL etc) that you can tweak one to our 6 metre band. They use a cordless phone only type PLL. I started a project to replace that chip with a little board that would get you on 6 but.... Even this is turning into larger project than I thought. You need a CPU to program the PLL, plus some sort of knob to talk to the PLL. Now then you will want a display to tell you where you are in freq. Pretty soon you start to think MAYBE I should just start from scratch. Well anyway it is fun. The little single channel units are easy enough to crystal up for simplex. Some have a single crystal and don't let you easily work repeaters. The older units have a crystal for transmit and another for recv and will work FB. Now you will want to consider adding another stage for higher output. These things are really peanut whistles. Not even 100 Milliwatts. 73! de WB0VNE aka 73016.27@compuserve.com --- AdeptXBBS v1.07f (Registered) * Origin: The Starfish 11 BBS / Eden Prairie, MN (1:282/2024) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 188 HAM TECH Ref: E2500007 Date: 02/04/97 From: JAY CRASWELL Time: 10:16am \/To: MARK CRANWELL (Read 3 times) Subj: Re: 144-148 Bands Ham tech is not the best area to ask about the good bands for No Code but... You get 6 metres which is great fun. If you want to work DX you will get a lot more chances on 6. Look for a SSB rig (Not FM although that is fun too) When 6 is open it sounds like 20 metres, however when 6 is dead.... It can be pretty quiet. A good place to learn patience. If your an old fisherman you will love it. 220 is fun and not as crowded as 144-148. 440 has ATV (Fast Scan TV), SSB, FM. All of the VHF+ bands (well many) are of interest if you want to work the world on sats! 145 and 435Mhz SSB/CW and some good stearable antennas are needed. (Well not on all of em) anyway there is a lot more to ham radio than 2 metre fm (uggh) /ex --- AdeptXBBS v1.07f (Registered) * Origin: The Starfish 11 BBS / Eden Prairie, MN (1:282/2024) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 188 HAM TECH Ref: E2B00000 Date: 02/04/97 From: BILL RISTER Time: 06:34am \/To: MARK CRANWELL (Read 3 times) Subj: 144-148 Bands On 01-31-97 MARK CRANWELL wrote to ALL... MC> Mark Netmail:1:348/303 MC> Mark.Cranwell@techtol.magic.mb.ca Who told you that Mark? What you refer to as a "non morse code" is the Technician license. With that license you can operate 50 MHz and up. How about 6 meters, 2 meters, 1.25 meters, 70 centimeters, 33 centimeters or 23 centimeters? How about SSB, FM, AM voice? How about packet, moon-bounce, television? You have a choice of all sort of activities. To learn more, make a trip to your local Radio Shack store (or maybe even your local library.) Look for a book published by the ARRL titled "Now You're Talking". It sells for about $19 and will not only give you information about what is available for you but will even help you prepare for your license examination. Here's hoping your next message will say something like "Hey, this is great! I'm studying for my license." 73, Bill de KC5EZQ ___ * OFFLINE 1.56 * I didn't know it was impossible when I did it! --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: The Politically Incorrect!
