Following are the official rules for participating in the message area: 1) The Scuba echo is the place to ask questions about the sport of Scuba diving. Please feel free to ask any questions, and to share your own experiences and dive travel reviews with all of us. 2) Please remember that many of the readers of this echo area are brand-new sport divers who do not have the necessary training and experience to handle advanced specialty diving situations. Discussions of mixed gas diving, extreme depth diving, and overhead environment diving are certainly welcome in this area, but we need to make it clear that these forms of diving require specialized training and experience. None of us wants the responsibility of inadvertently influencing an inexperienced diver into a potentially hazardous situation. 3) For reasons of liability and credibility: If you are a professional (Medical, Legal, dive instructor, etc) and you are offering your professional opinion/advice/facts, please post your qualifications and a way to contact you professionally should someone want further information. 4) Scuba "Agency bashing" is not allowed. Discussion of the pros and cons of the different certification agencies is okay as long as it remains a civilized discussion. 5) "Buy and Sell" type messages are okay, but before entering one please keep in mind that this message base is read by people all over the globe. 6) If you choose to quote an article from a magazine or newspaper into this message area, please be aware that you are very likely violating copyright laws. Technically, you need to have written permission from both the author and the publisher to reproduce their work in any form. 7) Before replying to an "upsetting" message, inhale 1 breath of Nitrous Oxide and 1 breath of Helium and read the message again, out loud. "Flaming" and/or name calling of other users for their warped opinions will not be tolerated. Period. 8) Let the moderator do the moderating. If you feel something has been said which is out of line, please send me a message via netmail. 9) Please plan your dives, dive your plans, and ONLY dive within the limits of your training and experience. Certification included 2 dives in a spring and 3 open water dives (like in West Palm.) My ex-husband got his Advanced Open Water at the same time, and I remember the classes cause I would go with him, and his Advanced Certification included night diving, deep diving, navigation, wreck diving and one other item that I can't remember because I didn't go on the dive. It may have just been coincidence, but it was pretty cool either way. I must admit that there aren't enough NASDS schools in my area though. My current husband as well as my brother-in-law want to be certified and I'd much prefer them to go NASDS. For us, living in Jacksonville, we can either travel 6 hours to Pensacola, or two hours to Daytona. After a hard days work, not a particularly appealing idea. But, somehow..... Anyways, thanks for the correction. The reasoning behind the 100 foot depth limit deals with nitrogen narcosis. NASDS is founded on stressing the highest safety standards for the Sport and that is why they have shallower depth limits (which coincedentally the Caymans and other areas are moving towards) and shorter bottom times than any other agency that I know about. Regarding the depth limit, the incidence of nitrogen narcosis shallower than 100 foot is significantly smaller than that below 100 feet. I can't cite numbers, but if the majority of divers never experience narcosis above 100 feet, then they are themselves safer, and one less problem they will probably never encounter. I know people will argue differently, but NASDS is founded on Sport Safety for Recreational diving, not for commercial or technical diving. I am just getting into diving myself (my Open Water course is just starting), but I have heard many thing about NITROX. The advantages to it are the ability to stay down longer then with air and allow some deeper dives (to those qualified) then what could be acomplished with air. But you must know how to mix it properly and know the formulas involved in calculating the adjustments. Certian mixtures are only good at certain depths. NITROX seems to be catching on fairly big here, and I have heard a number of divers that say they prefer NITROX. If you could afford to do so I think It would be worth taking the NITROX course. But as I said before I don't know too much about it as I am just beginging to get into diving.
