Could you please fill me in on this "German medical study"^^^) since I don't have a medical background. It is my understanding that a German university study has found that some sport divers are showingsigns of neural damage even though they have not had any problems with DCS.The incidence of brain lesions and spinal nerve damage was /is higher among sport divers than amongst commercial divers and it doesn't seem to matter if you have dove a bunch or just a few times. The lesions have been spotted by test subjects being given MRIs. DAN has questioned the German study and many health officals claim the study is flawed. I'm interested in talking to divers who may have had an MRI recently and if so, what arethe results. The lesions can cause memory lose, vision problems etc. --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: BoarD_BoB BBS Ontario *Canada* (Bottom-Time) (1:250/218) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: DCF00000 Date: 08/10/96 From: RON WHALEN Time: 08:40am \/To: STEVE ELLIOT (Read 1 times) Subj: Welcome aboard! I'm using SE> a US Divers Monitor II as my primary computer, but have thought SE> seriously about buying the Nemesis for my Nitrox diving. I have found the Aladin Air X here in Jeddah but have not found the Nemesis models. These 2 computers are of course top end models and have the price tag to go along with it. From what I have seen the Aladin Air X had a suggested manufacture retail of about 995 US dollars. The firm price here is about 960 US dollars. Any idea what the going price for it is on your side of the pond? I may just hold off until I pass through the Duty Free Shops in the UAE this fall. BTW - Just out of curiousity, what does it cost to get your tanks filled for Nitrox diving? Cheers, eh! Hi Mark, Hey were practically neighbors! I'm just on the other side of the Arabian Peninsula in Jeddah. Quick question. Are you familiar with the Duty Free Shops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi? A friend of mine had bought a dive computer there and said he saved a pile of money. Do you know, or have you talked to anyone that has purchased a dive computer or any other dive gear from these Duty Free Shops. I'll be in both places this fall some time when I come over to visit a friend in Abu Dhabi. (Anything to save a Buck or Riyal or Dinar) Cheers, eh! I have the Aladin Sport. This computer is packed with all the features I wanted and was moderately priced compared to other brands. The features I considered most important were these: 1. Automatic start as soon as the unit is immersed. I don't like computers that have to be switched on manually like the Oceanic models. I have seen too many divers forget to switch them on until the first time they check depth or bottom time, and by then it's too late-the data is meaningless. 2. PC interface. This is an extra cost option :( but is worthwhile since it gives you access to the last 37 dives. Only the last 19 dives can be scrolled on the Aladin's built in display. The PC interface also allows you to switch the unit from English to Metric units, and lets you graph the most recent 200 minutes of dive time (1 data point every 20 seconds), plus the lowest temperature encountered during each dive is uploaded to the PC. The temperature is another item that the Aladin doesn't display on it's own screen but is stored internally. 3. Most conservative tissue model used in recreational dive computers. All in all, I think the Uwatec Aladins are the best value around. There are fancier computers, and cheaper computers, but the Aladin is an excellent intermediate model. --- HyperMail! v1.22 * Origin: Omni - (916) 388-0905, longest running Sac BBS (1:203/3333) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: DCG00000 Date: 08/11/96 From: RON WHALEN Time: 09:32pm \/To: LAURENCE CHARLOT (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: dive computers LC> All in all, I think the Uwatec Aladins are the best value around. I have found shopping for a dive computer like shopping for a new veichle. I keep asking myself, "how much for that one more option, and do I REALLY need it?" I'll get it narrowed down and pass on any info to this conference during my sniffing around. Cheers, eh!
