I learned to dive in the mid 70's and made trips out in the Gulf of Mexico and to Cozumel. I stopped diving about ten years ago (funny, that corresponds with the beginning of my marriage) but I am starting to get the itch again. My wife refuses to dive in the ocean (scared of sharks :^) ) but seems willing to learn to dive in fresh water (yawn). Anyway, I figure I'll get her started in local lakes and try and get her interested in 'safe' ocean dives later. My questions are: What are equipment costs like now? What do lessons cost now? I need an update - is there a refresher or should I relearn from scratch (I am PADI certified but lost my C-Card years ago)? . Thanks for any input/advice. * SPITFIRE v3.5 --- Alexi/Mail 2.02b (#12) * Origin: Database Connections BBS * USR DS 16.8 * 713-980-3234 * (1:106/4196) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: DCB00002 Date: 08/06/96 From: RON WHALEN Time: 10:22am \/To: STEPHEN WEIR (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: brain lesions SW> Seriously though, IF, the German medical study has merit (and I am SW> not saying SW> that it does) divers may want to consider, cost willing, having an MRI done of Hello Stephen, We just picked up this conference in Jeddah and I have not been following this thread. I guess we can thank the designers and the simple design of most regulators for that. Rental gear can be mistreated and cause many a problem depending on which shop is renting it out. A buddy of mine rents all the time and I have seen some pretty shabby stuff. His depth gauge on his rental equipment I have seen reading 20 feet shallower then we actually are! If you're asking about purchasing a BC and regulator setup, you're looking anywhere from $500 up through about $1500. If you add a dive computer then it would be another $2-500. Mask, fins and snorkel will run $50 to $150. > What do lessons cost now? This is always a tough one to answer since there are lots of variables associated with the check out dives and equipment rentals. My best guess is that you're looking at a total price of $200-250 for open water lessons. > I need an update - is there a refresher or should I relearn > from scratch (I am PADI certified but lost my C-Card years ago)? PADI does offer a "Scuba Tune-Up" program designed for people who've been out of the water for a year or two. You might want to consider a complete retraining if it's been quite a long time since you've been diving. There have been numerous equipment changes in the last five years, as well as new thoughts about safety stops, dive physics, etc. --- Dive, dive, dive! * Origin: [\] Diver Down BBS [\] Ft. Dive computers have become very specialized in the past couple of years. Many folks used to be content with a simple "hockey puck" style of computer, but now they're seeing air integrated, hoseless, Nitrox, altitude-adjustable choices. The two computers you've mentioned are both excellent. I'm using a US Divers Monitor II as my primary computer, but have thought seriously about buying the Nemesis for my Nitrox diving. --- Dive, dive, dive! * Origin: [\] Diver Down BBS [\] Ft.
